Brussels Forensic Institute: Addressing Belgium’s Lack of Autopsies and Medical Examiners

2023-12-15 18:55:07

A new forensic institute will be created in Brussels within the Saint-Luc clinics. The FPS justice will invest no less than one million euros in it. It was regarding time when we know that only 2% of suspicious deaths in Belgium lead to an autopsy while at European level, 10% is recommended. These are perhaps all crimes that have gone unnoticed.

It must be recognized that the profession is lacking. Only 16 medical examiners are available to handle suspicious death cases nationwide. And their missions are multiple (on-call services, autopsies, laboratory analyses, assistance to victims of beatings or sexual abuse).

To better understand, we were authorized by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office to follow the only two doctors still currently active for the judicial districts of Brussels and Walloon Brabant in their various activities. And there is work to be done.
