A bus traveling on a highway in Pakistan’s Punjab province overturned on Saturday, killing 12 people and injuring eight others, police and health officials said.

Saqib Waheed, a spokesman for the Federal Highway Police, said the bus was on its way from the capital Islamabad to the eastern city of Lahore when its brakes failed 135 km from the capital at a sharp turn in the Salt Mountains.

According to Amjad Hussain, an official at Kalar Khar Town Hospital, seven died at the hospital, while five passengers, including women and children, were killed on the spot, and eight injured are still receiving treatment.

The pioneers of social networking sites shared videos that they said were of the terrible accident.

Traffic accidents are common in Pakistan, where safety standards are not followed to a large extent and traffic rules are regularly violated and rarely enforced.
