BYD Great Tang: New Flagship SUV with 1000kW Charging & 2000km Range Revealed

BYD has unveiled the first official images of its new D-segment flagship SUV, the Great Tang, with a launch date set for March 5, 2026. The vehicle, as well known as Datang in China, represents a significant expansion of the automaker’s Dynasty series and a push into the premium SUV market.

The Great Tang measures between 5.26 and 5.30 meters in length, positioning it as a competitor to large SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, and Range Rover, should it be released in Europe. It boasts a width of 2.00 meters (without mirrors) and a height ranging from 1.79 to 1.80 meters, with a substantial wheelbase of 3.13 meters. The vehicle’s dimensions exceed those of BYD’s existing Tang EV and Atto 8/Tang L models.

Lu Tian, General Manager of BYD Dynasty Network Sales Division, announced the upcoming debut on social media, sharing the official visuals of the new vehicle. The launch comes as BYD navigates a period of recent sales challenges, having experienced six months of negative sales figures.

The Great Tang is the first SUV from BYD to incorporate the company’s new “Super e” electrical platform. The vehicle will be offered with three powertrain configurations: two single-motor options producing between 402 and 496 horsepower, and a dual-motor version exceeding 600 horsepower. All versions will utilize a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery.

BYD’s Super e-Platform features an 800V architecture, combined with a 10C fast-charging battery and a 1000-ampere charging current, enabling a potential peak charging power of up to 1000 kW. This technology could allow for near-full battery replenishment in just over 10 minutes, leveraging BYD’s ongoing deployment of megawatt-level charging stations. The vehicle will feature a “Flash Charge” badge to distinguish it from models based on the e-Platform 3.0.

Aesthetically, the Great Tang features a closed grille with the “Tang” logo, flanked by sharp headlights. Design elements include partially concealed door handles and 20 or 21-inch wheels designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The vehicle also incorporates a horizontal light strip across the front bumper.

While BYD has not yet announced final pricing, the Great Tang is estimated to start above 400,000 yuan (approximately 50,000 euros as of March 6, 2026), a competitive price point for a vehicle of its size and technological specifications. Whether BYD will ultimately release the Great Tang in the European market remains unconfirmed.
