A Apple officially canceled its permit to test autonomous vehicles in the United States, which was valid until April 30, 2025, according to information from macReports.

The company contacted the California Department of Motor Vehicles (California Department of Motor Vehiclesor DMV) on 9/25 and formalized the cancellation two days later, on 11/27. The agency confirmed the decision, effectively ending Apple’s autonomous vehicle testing program.

This decision marks the end of Apple’s ambitions in the field of autonomous vehicles, the result of a significant strategic change. In February, Apple had canceled plans to launch an autonomous electric vehicle and redirected resources from “Project Titan” to generative artificial intelligence initiatives. This move reflected the company’s priority to focus on emerging technologies that offer greater opportunities for growth and innovation.

Since receiving the license in 2017, Apple has carried out extensive testing of autonomous vehicles. As of May 2024, the company has 68 vehicles and 15 drivers active in the testing program. However, this was a considerable reduction compared to previous years, raising questions about the future of the project and suggesting (at the time) a possible change in direction.
