The introduction of low-stimulus zones during fairs and events can also help people with autism in the longer term, Stijn knows: “We always think regarding people with autism: if we remove those stimuli, the problem will be solved. But that doesn’t always help. because people with autism also have problems with change. And if we make everything low-stimulus, people with autism will become used to a low-stimulus environment. If we then have to take a busy bus, we will no longer get used to that. So with zones we learn switching between quiet and less quiet environments,” Stijn concludes.
He hopes that the organization of the Meifoor in Bruges, which starts on April 19, will take his call into account.
