Cameron Young Wins Dramatic Players Championship 2024

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida – Cameron Young secured his second PGA Tour title and the biggest win of his career on Sunday, claiming the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The 26-year-old finished one stroke ahead of England’s Matt Fitzpatrick after a tense final round, punctuated by a clutch birdie on the 17th hole and a solid par on the challenging 18th.

Young’s victory marks a significant milestone after seven previous runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, including a win at the Wyndham Championship in August 2025. The Players Championship, often referred to as golf’s “fifth major,” presented a demanding test for the field, and Young navigated it with remarkable consistency, finishing at 13-under par. The win comes after a strong finish, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure on a course renowned for its difficulty.

A Tight Finish at TPC Sawgrass

The final round saw a dramatic shift in the leaderboard, with Ludvig Åberg, who held a three-shot lead entering the day, struggling on the back nine. Åberg’s challenges opened the door for Young and Fitzpatrick to battle for the lead. Fitzpatrick, aiming to develop into the first English golfer to win the Players Championship, applied significant pressure, but a crucial drive into the trees on the 18th ultimately led to a bogey and a second-place finish at 12-under par. Xander Schauffele finished third at 11-under, followed by Robert MacIntyre at 10-under.

Young’s winning moment came on the par-3 17th, the iconic “Island Green,” where he sunk a birdie putt to tie Fitzpatrick. He then delivered a 375-yard drive on the 18th – the longest recorded on that hole since ShotLink data began being tracked in 2004 – setting up a comfortable par and sealing the victory. “I feel like we just kept ourselves in a really good spot all day today, really all week,” Young said after the round. “The nerves kicked in over the 8-inch putt on the last. That hole looked really, really small there from pretty close range. So happy to have finished it off, and just really excited to have played the way I did.”

Åberg’s Back Nine Struggles

Åberg’s final round was a stark contrast to his impressive performance on Saturday, where he led the field. He entered Sunday with a three-shot lead but faltered with shots into the water on the 11th and 12th holes, resulting in a 40 on the back nine and a final score of 9-under, tying for fifth place alongside Jacob Bridgeman and Sudarshan Yellamaraju. Despite the setback, Åberg continues to seek his third career PGA Tour victory, having last won the Genesis Invitational in February 2025.

Fitzpatrick’s near miss was a result of a difficult lie after his drive on the 18th. “I picked up the tee quickly,” Fitzpatrick said. “I felt like I hit a good shot, maybe pushed it slightly. [We] felt that the wind was a little bit off the right. Obviously, I know Cam hits a draw. His moved a little bit, as well. Figured mine would do the same. Obviously, just [went] dead straight.” He narrowly missed an 8-foot par putt that would have forced a three-hole playoff.

Final Leaderboard

Here’s a look at the final leaderboard at the 2026 Players Championship:

  1. Cameron Young: -13
  2. Matt Fitzpatrick: -12
  3. Xander Schauffele: -11
  4. Robert MacIntyre: -10

  6. Jacob Bridgeman: -9
  7. Sudarshan Yellamaraju: -9
  8. Justin Thomas: -8

  10. Sepp Straka: -8

Cameron Young’s triumph at the Players Championship solidifies his position as a rising star in professional golf. His ability to remain composed under pressure, particularly on the demanding closing holes of TPC Sawgrass, proved to be the key to his victory. The win is expected to boost his confidence as he looks ahead to the upcoming major championships.

The PGA Tour now moves on to the next event on the schedule. Golf fans will be watching to see if Young can build on this momentum and continue his impressive form throughout the season. The competition promises to remain fierce as players vie for position in the FedExCup standings and prepare for the challenges ahead.
