Kilmarnock played host to the Scottish Schools Secondary Badminton Championships last weekend, where Campbeltown Grammar School students Murray and Millar Mackay showcased their talent on the national stage. The brothers, both S2 pupils, earned a silver medal, marking a significant achievement for the school and the local community.

The Mackay brothers’ success highlights the growing strength of badminton within Campbeltown Grammar School. Their performance at the championships builds on recent achievements by other students, demonstrating a thriving sporting environment. This success is particularly noteworthy given the school’s commitment to providing opportunities for students to excel in athletics alongside their academic pursuits.

Campbeltown Grammar School has seen a surge in badminton success recently. Last week, the school was crowned overall winner in a school-wide competition, with three individual group winners emerging. Murray Mackay himself secured victory in the S1 boys’ category, while Finlay Ramsay triumphed in the S2 boys’ group and Louise Ralston took the top spot in the S2 girls’ competition, according to a Facebook post from Campbeltown Grammar School.

Further demonstrating the school’s badminton prowess, seven out of ten pupils reached the finals in their respective year group categories. Alongside Murray Mackay’s S1 win, Louise Ross and Finley Ramsey as well secured first place in their S2 categories, as reported on the school’s Facebook page.

Campbeltown Grammar School, founded in 1686, currently serves the town of Campbeltown, the south Kintyre area, and the island of Gigha, with a student roll of 360, according to Argyll and Bute Council’s Secondary School Attainment Report. The school’s modern facilities, including Promethean Boards in all classrooms, contribute to an engaging learning environment.

The silver medal earned by Murray and Millar Mackay at the Scottish Schools Secondary Badminton Championships represents a proud moment for Campbeltown Grammar School and a testament to the dedication of the students and their coaches. The school’s recent successes across multiple age groups suggest a bright future for badminton within the institution.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on building upon this momentum and providing continued support for the school’s badminton program. The achievements of these young athletes serve as an inspiration to their peers and demonstrate the positive impact of investing in school sports.
