“Can yield up to 9,000 euros per year”: More and more people prefer this to a company car

Since 2019, companies have been able to offer a mobility budget instead of the traditional company car. With the mobility budget, people choose a train subscription, or they use it to pay for a rental bicycle.

But those who live less than 10 kilometers from work or work from home half the time can even choose to receive a budget from their employer for housing costs, such as paying part of their housing loan or rent. In 2023, 77% of people with a mobility budget opted for this. The budget can amount to 9,000 euros per year.

“We see three important reasons,” said Audrey Lampaert of the HR platform Mbrella on VTM. The first is that the young generation entering the labor market today looks at living and working in a completely different way.”

“Secondly, there are the high house prices. If you can finance part of your mortgage or rent with your mobility budget, that is a fantastic advantage.”

“Thirdly, many young people today do not have a driver’s license. A company car does not appeal to them, because they cannot drive it anyway.”
