In fact, 138 million dollars were lost by Canadians in 2019, while this number stood at 531 million last year.

The paragovernmental body also states that few people report these frauds of which they are victims; this number is estimated to oscillate between 5 and 10%.

The investigation reveals that among the reasons given for the absence of reports, victims say they have little hope of finding the color of their money.

Jeff Horncastel of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center suggests that this is the work of organized crime.

“These are frauds that are very well orchestrated. A lot of fraud comes from overseas,” but not only that.

He invites the population to learn regarding ways to protect themselves.

Jean-Benoît Turcotti, spokesperson at Desjardins, calls for vigilance.

“You have to be vigilant, be wary of all offers that are unsolicited, whether it’s a phone call, an email and all offers that are too good to be true,” he says.
