This Friday morning, at 9 a.m., a new safety meeting was held between the firefighters of the Val de Sambre zone, the Municipality of Jemeppe and the organizers of the Floreffe wine and cheese fair (which is now held in Spy).
The conclusion is clear: the event which was to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, is canceled due to the strong gusts of wind forecast for this weekend. The marquee, in particular its anchors to the ground, may not withstand and the risk is considered too great for the people, exhibitors and visitors, who may be there.
Already on Thursday morning, preparations had been disrupted by the passage of storm Ciaran. Two arbors had flown away and, on the recommendation of the fire chief, Colonel Marc Gilbert, access to the main marquee had been prohibited to the exhibitors who were to set up there. At the end of the day on Thursday, it was agreed that the sellers might serve customers who came to pick up their order “from the truck” on Friday morning, before a final analysis of the situation and forecasts. The outcome comes as a very hard blow for the organization.
