Cancer Patients Climb Peak to Inspire: Photo Exhibit in Brest

An exhibition currently on display in Brest, France, offers a powerful testament to resilience and the healing power of physical challenge. “L’Ascension de nos guérisons” (“The Ascent of Our Healings”) features striking photographs by Loïc Trujillo, documenting the journey of five cancer survivors who climbed the Pic de l’Étendard in the French Alps. The project, now in its fourth year, is spearheaded by the association Étendard du cancer digestif, and aims to highlight the benefits of physical activity for those undergoing cancer treatment and recovery.

The exhibition, open to the public until March 28, 2026, at the Faculty of Medicine in Brest, isn’t simply a display of breathtaking landscapes. It’s a deeply personal chronicle of solidarity, adaptation, and the triumph of life over illness. The ascent of the 3,464-meter peak – a significant physical undertaking – was preceded by months of preparation at the Ty Yann site of the Fondation Ildys in Brest, transforming patients from hospital visitors to determined climbers.

Dr. Pierre-Guillaume Poureau, a digestive oncologist and founder of Étendard du cancer digestif, emphasized the importance of the project. “Through the lens of Loïc Trujillo, we discover the journeys of patients touched by digestive cancers – Marie-Noëlle, Olivier, Vanessa, Pauline, and Olivier – who traded their hospital gowns for climbing boots,” he explained. “These photos immortalize solidarity, physical effort as a tool for care (adapted physical activity), and the victory of life over disease.”

The Healing Power of Physical Challenge

The association Étendard du cancer digestif operates on three core principles: overcoming challenges, raising awareness, and centering the patient’s perspective within the care process. The climb itself was designed as a form of adapted physical activity, recognizing the growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of exercise during and after cancer treatment. Research suggests that physical activity can improve quality of life, reduce fatigue, and even enhance treatment outcomes for cancer patients. The National Cancer Institute provides further information on the role of physical activity in cancer prevention and survivorship.

Trujillo’s photographs capture not only the grandeur of the alpine scenery but also the intimate moments of struggle, support, and achievement. “Inscribing this story within the faculty of medicine, a place of transmission by essence, takes on all its meaning,” Trujillo stated. “The individual stories join a collective reality where everyone can recognize themselves and feel concerned. It’s a sensitive, discreet, and rare incursion into the faces, gestures, and silences of patients during the ascent.”

Raising Awareness During “Blue March”

The exhibition’s timing coincides with “Mars bleu” (Blue March), a month dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer screening. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, but early detection through screening significantly improves treatment outcomes. The World Health Organization provides comprehensive information on colorectal cancer, including risk factors, symptoms, and screening guidelines.

Visitors to the exhibition have been attentive to Dr. Poureau’s presentation, demonstrating a keen interest in the project’s message. The exhibition is free and open to the public during the Faculty of Medicine’s opening hours, located at 22, rue Camille-Desmoulins, Brest. The story of these five patients and their ascent of the Pic de l’Étendard serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and the importance of holistic approaches to cancer care. As the association continues its perform, it aims to inspire others to embrace physical activity as a tool for healing and to advocate for patient-centered care.
