the call is out to celebrate Austria’s stunning aquatic landscapes! as part of the 2025 WATERACTIC FOTOWETTBEWERB,photographers are invited to capture the diverse and captivating beauty of the nation’s lakes. This initiative, spearheaded by Water Minister Norbert Totschnig, aims to highlight the invaluable role these “water jewels” play in both the habitat and Austria’s cultural identity.
“Our lakes are a valuable treasure for humans and nature,” stated Minister Totschnig at the launch of the competition. “They offer habitat for numerous plants and animals and are important places of relaxation. That is why these water jewels are indispensable as tourism magnets from the Austrian landscape. We have more than 60 larger lakes in an impressive diversity in Austria. With this photo competition, we want to draw attention to our lakes as an important part of our Austrian cultural and natural landscape.”
austria boasts an astonishing number of standing waters, with approximately 25,000 in total, including 62 larger lakes exceeding 50 hectares. Carinthia, with its renowned Wörthersee, Millstätter See, and Ossiacher see, is a notably prominent region. The Salzkammergut, featuring the iconic Wolfgangsee and Traunsee, alongside Burgenland’s cross-border Neusiedler see, are also celebrated as national water treasures.
The diversity of Austria’s lake landscapes is truly remarkable, ranging from pristine mountain lakes nestled within the Alps to the unique, shallow steppe lakes like the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Neusiedler See. These aquatic environments are not only crucial for the contry’s water balance but also serve as vital hubs for local recreation and tourism.
Beyond their aesthetic and recreational appeal, Austria’s lakes are critical habitats for a rich array of biodiversity. They support around 80 fish species and a multitude of water birds. The bank zones, in particular, are recognized as vital ecological assets. Acting as natural filters that buffer nutrients, these areas provide essential refuge and breeding grounds for fish, insects, amphibians, and water birds.
However, these delicate ecosystems are facing increasing pressure. Intensive land use, growth, and the undeniable impacts of climate change are threatening the integrity of these sensitive bank zones.
“Intact bank zones, reed stocks and aquatic plants are true treasures of biodiversity and contribute considerably to the preservation of water quality,” emphasized Water Minister Totschnig. “In order to secure these natural functions in the long term, targeted protection and renaturation measures are needed as well as a stronger awareness of the ecological importance of our lakes.”

Mastering Lake Photography: Techniques & Tips
Capturing stunning lake photos requires more than just pointing and shooting. Here’s how to elevate your photography:
Golden Hour Magic: The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset offer the most flattering light. This “golden hour” creates warm tones and long shadows, perfect for dramatic lake scenes.
Reflections: Lakes are natural mirrors. utilize reflections to create symmetrical compositions and add depth to your images. Look for calm water and captivating foreground elements.
Long Exposure Photography: Use a tripod and a slow shutter speed to blur the water’s surface, creating a dreamy, ethereal effect. Neutral Density (ND) filters are essential for long exposures in shining light.
Composition is Key: Employ the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing techniques to guide the viewer’s eye and create visually appealing images.
Explore Different Perspectives: Don’t just shoot from eye level. Experiment with low angles, high angles, and aerial perspectives (if possible) to find unique compositions.
Weather Adds Drama: Don’t shy away from cloudy or stormy weather. These conditions can create dramatic skies and moody reflections.
Focus Stacking: for landscapes with important depth, consider focus stacking to ensure sharpness throughout the entire image.
