Carinthia and Slovenia are aiming for a joint application to host the Winter Olympics in 2034. Carinthia’s Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) and the Slovenian Minister Matjaž Han, responsible for economics, tourism and sport, explained on Monday in Klagenfurt that they wanted to rely on existing infrastructure.

“We have already proven that we can host cross-border sporting events. It is also proven that there is sports infrastructure on both sides to commemorate the Winter Games,” explained Kaiser. With a focus on sustainability and the existing sports facilities, they also want to reject the “gigantomania of past games”.

The idea “should not just remain a vision, but there should now be an impetus for the presidents of the National Olympic Committees to discuss and consider an application from Carinthia and Slovenia, together with Italy,” said Kaiser. Han expressed confidence: “This vision can become a reality if the committee examines and considers it accordingly.”
