Carson City School Closures: Feb 17 Due to Winter Storm

by James Carter Senior News Editor

Carson City students will have a day off Tuesday, February 17, as all schools in the district are closed due to an incoming winter storm. The decision, announced late Monday night, comes as a winter storm warning has been issued for the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area, with hazardous travel conditions expected throughout the day.

District officials cited anticipated heavy snow accumulation and unsafe conditions as the primary reasons for the closure. The early notification is intended to allow families sufficient time to arrange for childcare, according to a press release from the Carson City School District. This closure impacts all school activities, programs, and services.

Full Closure Details

All students and school employees are directed to remain home. This includes the cancellation of all student activities, afterschool programs, and athletic practices. Crucially, no school services will be available, including transportation, nutrition programs, and student health services. The Carson City School District is urging families to stay informed about evolving weather conditions and to monitor official district communication channels for further updates.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Reno forecast as of Monday evening predicts snow likely before 10 p.m. Tonight, with a low around 22 degrees Fahrenheit. A south wind of 15 to 35 mph is likewise expected. Tuesday’s forecast calls for snow, potentially heavy at times, with a high near 37 degrees Fahrenheit. Modern snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches is possible. Tuesday night will bring continued snow, with a low around 14 degrees Fahrenheit and an additional 2 to 4 inches of accumulation possible. The Nevada Appeal has the full NWS forecast.

Regional School Closures

Carson City is not alone in facing school closures due to the winter storm. The Storey County School District has also announced all schools will be closed Tuesday due to predicted heavy snow and dangerous road conditions. Bishop Manogue Catholic High School will transition to virtual learning for the day. MyNews4 reports that schools across northern Nevada are impacted.

The winter storm is also impacting travel. I-80 has reopened to traffic in the Sierra, but conditions remain hazardous. A separate incident, a fatal head-on crash on US-395 north of Reno, has closed all northbound lanes as of late Monday.

Carson Middle School also confirmed the closure on its website, reiterating the district-wide decision. Visit the Carson Middle School website for more information.

Families are encouraged to check the Carson City School District website for the latest information and updates regarding the storm and any potential changes to the school schedule. The district will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as needed.

As the winter storm moves through the region, residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling and to be prepared for potentially hazardous conditions. The situation will continue to be monitored, and further announcements will be made as necessary.
