Equatorial Guinea: Marburg virus kills 12 according to new report
2023-04-25 17:05:50
The new provisional toll of the Marburg virus disease epidemic that has been raging for more than three months in Equatorial Guinea stands at 12 dead, according to a new confirmed toll from the Ministry of Health confirmed on Monday.
The last death recorded by the authorities due to the epidemic of this virus, cousin of Ebola and almost as deadly as it, dates back to April 11.
As of April 21, “there have been 17 cases and 12 deaths since the start of the epidemic,” the Ministry of Health said in a report presenting epidemiological data for Marburg virus disease.
A total of 116 contact cases are being monitored, compared to 385 on April 11, and 1,427 people have been contact cases since the start of the epidemic, according to the same source.
The recorded cases of this haemorrhagic fever overflowed from the province of Kié-Ntem where it had caused the first known deaths on January 7, to reach Bata, the economic capital of this small country in Central Africa, which concentrates the majority confirmed positive cases (11 out of 17), according to the authorities.
Almost a month ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on Equatorial Guinea to report cases of the Marburg virus to it due to fears of more widespread contamination than announced. The UN agency was alarmed by a potential “large-scale epidemic”, which might affect neighboring Gabon and Cameroon in particular.
The Marburg virus is transmitted to humans by fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, or with surfaces and materials. The fatality rate can reach 88%.
There are no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments to treat the virus. However, supportive care, oral or intravenous rehydration, and treatment of specific symptoms increase the chances of survival.

“Navalny’s Extremism Case: Updates, Details, and Latest Developments”
2023-04-26 13:51:00
Navalny has 10 days to familiarize himself with the documents in the extremism case once morest him, the judge rules
A judge has ruled that jailed Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has 10 days to “familiarize himself” with the documents in the extremism case once morest him, his spokesman Kira Yarmysh said on Twitter.
The sentence was handed down in a closed-door hearing at the Basmanny Russian District Court in Moscow.
The Russian state news agency TASS said there were 196 volumes of documents related to this case. According to TASS, the court will reconsider the issue following May 5.
Navalny’s daughter, Daria Navalnaya, told CNN’s Jim Sciutto on Tuesday that in “each volume there are 250 double-spaced pages.”
“Terrorism case”: Navalny said he had been told he was facing a new “terrorism case,” in comments posted on one of his official Twitter accounts on Wednesday.
He said the “terrorist case”, alleged to have occurred while he was in prison, was separate from the extremism case once morest him.
Navalny said he had been told the case would be tried “by a military court.”
Key background: Navalny is Russia’s best-known opposition politician. He survived an attempt on his life following being poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent in 2020.
Last March, Navalny was sentenced to nine years in prison in a maximum-security prison, according to Russian state media outlet Tass, following being convicted on fraud charges over allegations that he had stolen from his Anti-Corruption Foundation.
At the time, he was already serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence in a detention center east of the Russian capital, following being arrested in February 2021 for violating probation, a verdict he said was politically motivated.
In June 2022, he was transferred to a maximum security prison in Melekhovo, in the Vladimir region, TASS reports, citing Sergey Yazhan, chairman of the regional public oversight commission.
