The Casino group, a major player in retail in France, recently announced the sale of its supermarkets and hypermarkets, marking a significant change in the distribution landscape in mainland France.
This decision stems from financial difficulties, with a considerable debt of more than 6 billion euros, forcing CEO Jean-Charles Naouri to take drastic measures, including the sale of these establishments to a consortium of buyers including Daniel Krestinsky, a wealthy Czech businessman, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, a Frenchman, and the British fund Attestor. Jean-Charles Naouri will give up his place to these new shareholders at the beginning of 2024.
The sale concerns 313 stores, including supermarkets and hypermarkets, in addition to the 61 already sold to Intermarché. However, Casino will retain its convenience stores and Monoprix. Among the stores concerned, we find establishments located in Cofra Luçon, Cauderan, Aix les Bains, Bazeilles, Tours la Riche, Poitiers, Chagny, Bordeaux Courberand, Fontaine les Dijon, Chasse sur Rhône, Fumel, Sénas, Luxeuil les Bains, Niort , Paris Grand Pavois, Metz, Parasol, Pau Charles de Gaulle, and many others. Intermarché and Auchan appear to be the main beneficiaries of this sale. Intermarché aims to integrate the Casino supermarkets, thus crossing the 2,000 store mark to become an undisputed leader, while Auchan is focusing on hypermarkets to strengthen its presence on the French market. According to the Casino CGT and other sources, more than 50 Casino stores are expected to soon be transformed into Intermarché, leading to significant changes for employees who will have to adapt to a new dynamic following having been in competition for a long time.
This sale is also seen as an initiative aimed at strengthening France’s control over the food sector and guaranteeing a certain national sovereignty, according to the arguments put forward by Intermarché and Auchan. For Casino, the sale of these stores represents an opportunity to resolve its financial problems and reinvest in the sectors it wishes to retain. These stores generated approximately €3.6 billion in revenue in 2022, which is of crucial importance for the future of Casino.

Copper theft causes service interruptions, affecting the provision of electricity and telecommunications. These disruptions negatively impact business productivity and can harm consumer confidence. As a result, end users, whether consumers or businesses, experience service interruptions that undermine their confidence in the stability of the services provided.
Furthermore, the toll of copper theft is becoming increasingly heavy for the various companies. Copper theft forces Steg and other companies to replace stolen cables, generating substantial costs. These unplanned expenses can disrupt pre-established budgets and compromise planned investments in other crucial areas. And despite the serious risks to personal safety, acts of theft continue to increase, increasing the pressure on these companies which are vital to the country’s infrastructure.
Faced with this critical situation, concrete measures are necessary. It becomes imperative for the authorities, the companies concerned and the community to work together to put in place deterrent strategies, strengthen infrastructure security, and raise awareness among the population regarding the consequences of these criminal acts. Given that copper theft in Tunisia is not limited to numbers, but profoundly affects the operational stability and brand image of essential businesses, it is time to act collectively to protect this vital infrastructure, guarantee the continuity of services and deter those who threaten the economic stability of the country.
In this regard, vigilance, awareness and cooperation are essential to meet this growing challenge. This is still true at a time when copper theft represents much more than a financial threat. This is a direct attack on the operational stability of businesses, leading to damaging consequences for ordinary citizens who rely on services such as electricity and telecommunications. The ineffectiveness of current measures to curb this scourge therefore demonstrates the urgent need for more coordinated and strategic action.
Current policies, although focused on infrastructure security, appear insufficient in the face of the increasing sophistication of acts of copper theft. Existing sanctions do not appear to effectively deter criminals, highlighting the need to strengthen legal provisions and work with local communities for increased monitoring. Investments in deterrent technologies and continued awareness are also essential to combat this growing threat. Preserving the integrity of national infrastructure also depends on our collective ability to put an end to this dangerous spiral of copper theft.

Major brands and luxury houses are not immune to unsold items. In France and Germany, destroying or disposing of inventory is prohibited by law. Although this is not the case in Switzerland, brands are nevertheless increasing their vigilance to avoid waste and even profit from it.
Like every year following Christmas, Bongenie Grieder stores have unbeatable sales. “There, these are different brands which are on sale at prices of 30 to 50%”, illustrated Friday in the 7:30 p.m. of the RTS the Communication manager of Bongenie Claudia Torrequadra, pointing to a clothing rack.
But as not all luxury brands can afford to go on sale, the brand doesn’t stop there. “We sometimes have sales for staff. Depending on the quantity of merchandise we have, we make this decision and organize an internal sale at our purchasing center, at reduced prices,” continues Claudia Torrequadra.
Another option which is enjoying growing success: “outlets”, shops which only sell discounted items, often end of series items. That of Aubonne is the only one of its kind in French-speaking Switzerland. Major brands sell their stocks there, selling their products at very competitive prices.
“The customer comes looking for good deals. Whether it is a customer from a higher socio-professional class or a customer with average purchasing power. The advantage is that they will find big brands there at a reduced price. The reduction is at least -30%, but it can go up to -70% during the sales”, underlines Cédrick Soudron, director of the Aubonne Outlet center at the RTS microphone.
Every month, the center is contacted by around ten ready-to-wear brands who would like to set up their store there. Driven by inflation and the decline in purchasing power, attendance at the center increased by 7% in 2023.
