Becoming the Primate of Belgium: Luc Terlinden’s Journey and Views on the Marriage of Priests
2023-06-26 04:05:00
In a few weeks, Luc Terlinden will succeed Cardinal De Kesel as head of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. At 54, he will become the primate of Belgium. Meeting with a man who would not be opposed to the marriage of priests, he who was deeply in love before turning to the Church.
Luc Terlinden is celebrating Mass when we meet him this Sunday morning in Mechelen. A role that made him want to play very early on. “I believe that at the age of six, between firefighter and veterinarian, it happened to me to say that I wanted to become a priest. Afterwards, it’s a bit past, but following the age of 12, all the same, the question came up regularlyโ, he confides to us.
From college to military service
He first studied economics in Louvain-la-Neuve, then in Leuven to perfect his Dutch. He then did his military service. “I am from a military family. It motivated me to do it, and also to do it as a reserve officer. I may have learned to be more careful, less impulsive“, explains Luc Terlinden.
The Brussels resident became a teacher for a few months, before entering the seminary at the age of 24, then becoming a priest.
His opinion on the marriage of priests and the role of women in the Church
Last Thursday, Pope Francis chose him to succeed Cardinal Josef De Kesel. “The first reaction, I admit that I was a little scared because it’s a very impressive task, it’s a great confidence that is given to meโ, reacts Luc Terlinden.
At 54, he will become the youngest primate in Belgium. Among the missions he gives himself: to make more room for women. “With the bishop, women can also be collaborators and not content themselves, as in the past, with secretarial tasks, but much more than that.โ, he tells us.
Before entering the church, Luc Terlinden is not afraid to say that he was very much in love and that today he is open to the question of the marriage of priests. “In the churches of the East, they know today married priests and celibate priests and they see a richness there. I believe that we have to gain by welcoming this experienceโ, he specifies.
This Sunday followingnoon, Luc Terlinden ordained three new priests. On September 3, he will be ordained archbishop.

– Ring push-ups: these types of push-ups are a very challenging variant, compared to traditional push-ups. By stretching one of the hands, holding rings and with the other supporting the body, more stabilizing muscles of the chest are activated, it is necessary to maintain a good body position and lower the body, keeping the arms close to the body.
– Swiss bench dumbbell press: the Swiss bench, the stability ball, adds an element of instability to the exercise, so when using it, a greater effort is required from the muscles of the upper chest, it is recommended to use it by performing a dumbbell press on the swiss bench in a controlled manner trying to maintain balance.

Remembering Marc-Vivien Foรฉ: An Elder Always There for Advice
2023-06-26 03:33:06
The man : ” An elder always there for advice ยป
They were all there that day. On the ground which was to witness the last strides of their teammate Marc-Vivien Foรฉ. Lucien Mettomo, Bill Tchato, and Pius N’Diefi started in the Cameroon-Colombia match (1-0), semi-final of the Confederation Cup, on June 26, 2003 in Gerland (Lyon). That day they lost a teammate, โ a friend, a big brother ยป. ยซ Twenty years later, I have the memory of a nice guy to live withtestifies today Lucien Mettomo. Someone who respected those around him, who was very family. Who wanted people around him to smile.ย ยป
The former Saint-รtienne player shared the same room as Marc-Vivien Foรฉ in the selection and had welcomed him when he arrived at Manchester City in 2002. He was an elder who was always there to give you advice, to listen to you when you were in a difficult time โ, continues Mettomo.
Bill Tchato, he keeps the image of a Foรฉ ” very generousโ โA person who welcomed me in a very, very positive way into the group of Lions since he was there before me. ยป
ยซ Discreet and kind adds Pius N’Diefi. The former Sedan striker sat next to Marc-Vivien Foรฉ in the dressing room and on the national team bus. Strangely, on the day of the tragedy, the discreet City player had not hesitated to sketch dance steps on the bus during the trip to go and play in the semi-final.
The drama: โOn asked the doctors to redo a cardiac massageโ
โIt happened on an action in which he is 40 meters from me. I see help coming. Until we leave the field, go to the locker room, there is no worry. At the time of going to scrubbing, the trainer holds us back and tells us that something serious has happened. The rest, we know itโฆ “. Lucien Mettomo still finds it difficult to relive this sad moment today and does not really want to dive back into these painful moments.
Bill Tchato remembers almost every minute of that match and the followingmath. He was no longer on the lawn when Marc-Vivien Foรฉ fell. The left-back from Kaiserslautern (Germany) at the time had received a second yellow card, synonymous with exclusion in the 69แต minute. It is therefore from the stands that he sees his teammate lying on the lawn, five minutes following his exit. ” You can “Marco” falls, you don’t immediately realize that the problem is serious. What others see on TV; eyes rolled back, I don’t see him. So he got out and evacuated to the locker room. I keep watching the game and then we qualify ยป.
Cameroon is in the final of the Confederation Cup and will meet France three days later. There are songs and smiles. When leaving the locker room to carry out the cleaning to prepare for the final in three days, the Indomitable Lions meet Roger Milla. The legend weeps. ” Mark is gone! he said. ” We fell apartremembers Pius N’Diefi. Everyone was crying, it was shock. I was next to him two hours before, and now he was gone. It was not possible. I remember, we even asked the doctors to redo a cardiac massage so much we might not believe it ยป.
The final, no one wanted to hear regarding it. ” We had just lost a teammate, football is nothing compared to โsays Bill Tchato. It is finally on the request of the wife of Marc-Vivien Foรฉ that the group resolves to face France precisely to pay homage to โMarcoโ. ” We had to play for him, explains N’Diefi. He was a warrior, we had to play for him ยป.
The Lesson: ยซ To enjoy life ยป
This June 26, 2003 will remain forever etched in the collective memory of Cameroonian sport. “Cameroon has won African Cups, played World Cups, lived great moments, but this day will remain, it is obliged, the worst day in the history of Cameroonian football โ, according to Pius NโDiefi.
For all of Marc-Vivien Foรฉ’s teammates present that day, the tragedy changed their lives in the way they approach their sport or their existence. “It completely changed my way of looking at things.recognizes Lucien Mettomo. I got involved and I am now active in the social field. I have been part of the National Association of Cameroonian Footballers for years, which deals with everything related to the retraining and structuring of their life following football. It was inspired by him (Marc-Vivien Foรฉ, Editor’s note), because he was someone who cared regarding others and the elders. He had a form of generosity that I greatly missed..ย ยป
For a long time, Pius N’Diefi had moments of stress when walking the lawns following losing his friend. ” I was afraidrecognizes the retired player who currently lives in Saint-Quentin (Hauts-de-France). I often did heart tests to see if everything was okay. If it happened to “Marco”it might happen to anyone ยป.
ยซ Life is short and it’s something that can happen to anyonelance Bill Tchato. You really have to minimize things and there are things much more serious than that. After this tragedy, I said to myself that I had to enjoy life. We do a great sport. We are privileged to earn our living by playing, unlike other people who get up in the morning at 5am or 6am and only come home in the evening. ยป
This Monday, June 26, the Association of Cameroonian Footballers is organizing a friendly match between former internationals in tribute to Marc-Vivien Foรฉ. A minute of silence will be observed before the start of the meeting.
