After the successful screening days in March, the medical facility is repeating them in the fight once morest HCV. Hepatitis C is an insidious disease that often goes unnoticed for a long time and is only discovered at an advanced stage.
It has now been scientifically proven that a timely diagnosis can lead to a complete cure through appropriate drug treatment, reports the South Tyrolean medical company in a press release. This can prevent severe organ damage and/or liver transplants.
“We want to ensure that the spread of HCV in South Tyrol is pushed back,” says Director General Florian Zerzer. “That’s why we’re repeating the Screening Days, also to meet the high demand from the population born between 1969 and 1989. It is important to us to keep pointing out that prevention is the best way to avoid health problems.”
Figures on the tests performed
Of the 11,666 blood samples taken (11,065 evaluated), 34 were positive as of March 28, 2023, which corresponds to almost 0.31 percent of the tests evaluated. This number is below the expectations of the experts’ estimates. People who have been exposed to the HCV virus will be contacted to have their blood drawn once more to more accurately determine their viral load.
