Around thirty undocumented women, including several with children, moved into an empty building located in the Brussels commune of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert on Saturday morning.
Members of the Undocumented Women’s Committee, the occupants – the majority of whom find themselves in a very precarious situation – came to take shelter from the freezing temperatures. The place where they took up residence is a former hotel, established at 101 Brand Whitlock Boulevard. According to the committee, the building had already been used to house Ukrainian asylum seekers last year, and had then remained empty for several months until now.
Laeticia, spokesperson for the Committee of Undocumented Women of Brussels and resident of the occupied building, informs that the place is supplied with water and electricity. This opening is part of a long series of actions launched by the collective “The voice of undocumented immigrants from Brussels”, which includes the Women’s Committee as well as activists.
“These actions aim to raise awareness of the precarious situation in which undocumented immigrants live on the one hand, and to offer concrete solutions on the other,” explains the women’s collective. He adds that this new occupation arises in reaction to “the inaction of the political authorities regarding housing solutions for undocumented people in Brussels, particularly vulnerable in this regard, due to their administrative situation”.
