France’s Social Electric Car Leasing: Eligible Models and Additional Expenses Explained

To encourage the French to drive electric, the government has decided to set up a “social leasing” system. The latter aims to allow the most modest households to acquire an electric car for 100 euros per month. A first list of models which will be affected by this leasing has been revealed.
List of eligible electric cars
Among the models offered by the social leasing service set up by the government are the Renault Mégane E-Tech, the Peugeot E-208 and E-2008, the Renault Twingo E-Tech, the Citroën ë-C4, the Opel Mokka Electric and Corsa Electric or even the Fiat 500e. Other electric models may also be eligible, but they must meet the following conditions: a minimum environmental score, an acquisition price less than or equal to 47,000 euros and a weight less than or equal to 2,400 kg.
The beneficiaries of this system will therefore pay 100 euros per month. Regarding the initial monthly payment, the government plans to double the bonus, which will allow beneficiaries to pay a first monthly payment of only 100 euros. However, this will depend on the vehicle model. Thus, the smallest will be offered at a monthly payment of less than 100 euros. On the other hand, larger models, sedan type, will be offered at more than 100 euros per month.
Other expenses to consider
However, to this monthly payment of 100 euros, other expenses must be added, such as insurance. Not being included in the leasing offer, it can easily double the monthly budget for the car. According to Le Parisien, which relies on calculations from the Assurland comparator, for a Renault Twingo E-Tech, the cost of all-risk insurance can vary from 27.33 euros per month for a driver with a 50 to 111 bonus. .91 euros for a young driver without bonus. In the latter case, the amount of insurance then represents almost 3 times the minimum rent for the car, although it is announced from 40 euros per month.
Other costs to take into consideration: the socket to recharge the vehicle at home. To recharge, you must at least install a reinforced socket or, at best, a charging station. According to the EDF website, it costs between 700 and 1,000 euros for the installation of a reinforced socket (3.7 kWh power) and between 500 and 2,500 euros for a 7.4 kWh terminal. In 2023, the amount of the tax credit is equal to 75% of expenses within the limit of 300 euros per terminal acquired. From 2024, the amount of the tax credit will still be set at 75% of expenses, but with a ceiling which should be increased to 500 euros, only for remotely controlled terminals.
