LBurkina Faso and the People’s Republic of China maintain relations in several areas, notably education. Burkinabè students benefit from the training and scholarship programs offered by this country. It is within this framework that the Chinese Ambassador to Burkina Faso awards each year a scholarship to top students called: “the Chinese Ambassador’s scholarship”. This year’s scholarship award ceremony was held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, in Ouagadougou.

A total of fifty students from three universities in Ouagadougou benefited from this scholarship. These include, in particular, Joseph Ki-Zerbo University (20 students), Thomas Sankara University (20 students) and Aube Nouvelle University (10 students). According to the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Burkina Faso, Lu Shan, his country and Burkina Faso maintain good relations as equals and support each other.

According to him, in the field of education, the two countries are looking to the future by strengthening their cooperation in terms of talent development.

“In just five years, we have achieved remarkable results. Indeed, every year, the Embassy offers scholarships from the Chinese Ambassador to enable students to study in good conditions,” he added.

Composition of the scholarship

Fifty in number, the beneficiaries are the best students selected from these three universities. This scholarship will allow them to benefit from a grant of 250,000 FCFA to help them continue their studies in good conditions in their respective universities. The scholarship takes into account a single year.

For the representative of the university authority at the ceremony, also president of Aube Nouvelle University, Isidore Kini, it is an honor that the choice of this program is made among these three universities. “As a university, these scholarships remind us that we must continue to develop excellence,” he continued. He invited the beneficiaries to seize this opportunity to continue to excel in their studies. Also, he asked the Chinese Ambassador to further strengthen this scholarship program, in order to contribute more to the education of Burkinabè youth.

More than a scholarship, a hope for the beneficiaries

Mariam Nacanabo is a bilingual management assistance student at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University. She is the representative of the scholarship holders. According to her, they are honored to be part of this Chinese Ambassador scholarship program. “For this, we thank him very much and we also thank our university authorities for the efforts made to facilitate such opportunities for their students. We are committed to working very hard, in order to maintain excellence,” she added. For her, this scholarship represents much more than financial aid. She also embodies hope and opportunity for each of them to achieve their educational and professional goals. The Chinese Ambassador reassured university authorities and students that cooperation between the two countries was only at its beginning. According to him, the Embassy will continue its dynamic of cooperation, by diversifying its education program in the coming days. These include, in particular, the increase in the scholarship quota and the introduction of Chinese language teaching in universities.o

More than 500 Burkinabè students already beneficiaries of Chinese scholarships

Dn its cooperation with Burkina Faso in the field of education, China offers two scholarship programs to Burkinabè students, notably, the Chinese Ambassador scholarship and the Chinese government scholarship which offers the opportunity to exceptional young people to study in China.
