Nearly 1,500 people died from malaria in 2023 in the city-province of Kinshasa alone, according to data provided by the provincial ministry of health in the Congolese capital, cited Thursday by the online media Actualité.cd.
In 2023 alone, out of some 443,960 positive malaria cases recorded, 1,583 people died from this disease.
“The latest epidemiological bulletin for 2023 from the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP) proves that confirmed cases and deaths are increasing by almost 50% in the city of Kinshasa,” indicated the provincial Minister of Health. public of Kinshasa, Liza Nembalemba, quoted by the information site.
In 2022, malaria was the leading cause of death in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with more than 13,000 deaths out of a total of more than 21 million cases. These figures were reported by the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) citing the national program to combat malaria.
As part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015, member states made a commitment to end the malaria epidemic by 2030.
The DRC is faced with a whole series of concomitant epidemics – such as yellow fever, cholera and malaria – the number of which is increasing under the effect of recent natural disasters, to the point of threatening the Congolese health system, particularly in the east of its territory, plagued by violence for almost three decades.

Even though “The Artful Dodger” was originally conceived as a miniseries and has not yet been renewed, fans can be positive for now. Because …
As in the first eight episodes, the new season might other characters from Charles Dickens’ novel “Oliver Twist”. Thewlis confirms that this idea is already floating around in the heads of the Shworunners: He suggests that Herr Micawber from “David Copperfield” (another Dickens novel) appears in season 2 – following all, his character came from Australia, where “The Artful Dodger” is filmed. Incidentally, Mr. Micawber is said to be modeled on the author’s father. We think there is definitely potential here!

This undermortality is observed in most age groups, but particularly among those aged 65-84. Among the latter, Sciensano counts 1,434 fewer deaths (-3.0%) than expected. This undermortality is also more marked among men (-3.0%) than among women (-1.5%).
The national statistical office Statbel, which relies on a different calculation methodology and on provisional figures, indicates a real drop of 4.3% in deaths between 2022 and 2023. This is an evolution of – 3.3% in the Brussels-Capital Region, -4.2% in Flanders and -4.7% in Wallonia.
At Sciensano, over- or under-mortality is recognized when the number of deaths recorded exceeds the upper or lower limits provided by the Be-Momo model. The latter is itself established on the basis of data collected over the previous five years.
