Burgenland’s music scene is extremely lively and diverse, and the GENERATION NEXT project is now making a broad audience aware of this. The idea for this festival series came regarding in 2022 and will now go “on stage” in September and October 2023 – in Mannersdorf, Oberwart and Mattersburg. The state of Burgenland is thus responding to the desire of many artists for more performance opportunities, emphasizes state governor and cultural officer Hans Peter Doskozil: “The musicians and music fans want live concerts. With the GENERATION NEXT project we are making this possible and bringing a new generation of creative bands to the fore.” On three concert days, visitors can see a total of 14 Burgenland bands free of charge. The project is part of the 2023 cultural package, which was launched by LH Hans Peter Doskozil to quickly and efficiently cushion the wave of inflation and the followingeffects of the pandemic in the local art and culture scene and to give artists the necessary support. “The state’s task is to create the best framework conditions for art and culture. This also includes the provision of additional performance and presentation opportunities. With GENERATION NEXT we are promoting the local scene and also giving newcomers at the beginning of their careers the chance to perform in front of an audience,” says Doskozil.

From Opus and Christian Kolonovits to Garish to Mira Lu Kovacs, Burgenland has played a key role in shaping the Austrian music landscape. “The challenges of the past few years have somewhat obscured the view of the country’s still vibrant music scene. With the GENERATION NEXT festivals, the state of Burgenland makes the diversity of the local subculture visible to a broad audience,” said state governor and cultural officer Hans Peter Doskozil. The festivals give the musicians a stage and at the same time provide a boost for the locals, the technology companies, sound engineers and graphic designers involved. The idea of ​​supporting the Burgenland band scene with this format came regarding in a conversation with LH Doskozil in 2022, in which numerous cultural figures in the country took part. Concepts, ideas and suggestions for improving the local art and cultural landscape were introduced and discussed. One result of this conversation is the GENERATION NEXT project, which is being implemented by Nick Wukovits with the support of the state of Burgenland.

Greece rescues 90 migrants traveling on a yacht in the southwest of the country

ATHENS (AP) — Authorities launched a rescue operation Wednesday morning for dozens of migrants traveling on a yacht in trouble off the southwest coast of Greece.

According to the Coast Guard, the vessel, believed to have regarding 90 people on board, was spotted regarding 40 nautical miles west of the small town of Pylos.

Six of the passengers were picked up by another yacht passing through the area and taken to Pylos, where a woman was taken to a hospital in Kalamata, a city in the south of the country.

Another 25 were rescued by an oil tanker sailing nearby and were heading to Kalamata, while the rest of the passengers were being transferred to another merchant ship, the coast guard explained.

There was also a Coast Guard lifeboat in the area and another of their vessels was on its way. No disappearances have been reported.

The site of the incident is close to where hundreds of migrants died and went missing in a shipwreck in June, a disaster in which Greek authorities were criticized for failing to respond adequately to rescue the passengers.

The overcrowded fishing boat had left Libya with between 500 and 700 people on board, according to estimates. Only 104 survived and 82 bodies were recovered. The rest sank along with the trawler in one of the deepest areas of the Mediterranean.

Last week, 40 of the survivors filed a lawsuit in Greece once morest “all responsible parties,” alleging that Greek authorities failed to intervene to rescue the passengers before the shipwreck.

Many of the survivors dispute the official story that repeated offers of help from the Coast Guard were rebuffed and claim that a botched effort was made to tow the ship to safety shortly before it capsized and sank.
