Dementia, one of the leading causes of death worldwide, can show up in unexpected areas of everyday life – even driving behavior. A US study reveals that unsafe and erratic driving can be an early sign of the disease.

Dementia is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide and places a significant burden on both those affected and their loved ones. While the search for a cure continues, identifying symptoms early is the best way to manage and mitigate the effects of the disease.

An unexpected sign of dementia can show up in driving behavior. According to a study by the National Institute on Aging in the US, people with dementia can start getting big traffic fines as their driving becomes more unsafe and erratic. Dangerous mistakes include mixing up the brake and accelerator pedals, suddenly changing lanes and inappropriate speed. New dents or scratches on the car or multiple accidental missteps or collisions can also indicate the disease.

Determined by genetics

Dementia makes even simple and familiar tasks, such as driving, a challenge. Brain function and cognitive activity begin to wane, causing simple tasks or basic routines to take unexpected amounts of thought and energy.

The risk of dementia can accumulate over a lifetime and is determined in part by genetics, which cannot be changed. There is currently no cure or way to slow down the deadly disease that robs sufferers of memory, intelligence and physical strength.

Until a cure is found, identifying symptoms early remains the best way to manage and mitigate the effects of the disease.

He Team Chile y Oakleya sportswear and eyewear brand distributed by the Yáneken group, have just signed a interesting alliance that will directly benefit the national athletes classified to the Pan American Games Santiago 2023an event to be held during October and November of this year.

The agreement, which is estimated to favor regarding 700 local athletes -the largest delegation in the history of Chile in the competition-, contemplates the delivery of glasses for each of the classified members of the ‘Red’ of all sports to the year-end competition.

In this regard, the president of the Chilean Olympic Committee (COCH), Miguel Ángel Mujica, declared that “for us, this alliance between Team Chile and Oakley is great news. It is a brand linked to sport, of international prestige and which also confirms the importance of private companies contributing and joining the State’s support for high-performance athletes”.

Along with that, Mujica added that “we seek that the commitment, which will benefit all our athletes, serve to get other brands interested and want to be part of this milestone.”
