Analgesics are very useful drugs once morest pain. Nevertheless, some expose to a risk of dependence and high toxicity, especially in the event of prolonged use. This is the case of Antarene Codeine, a combination of codeine and ibuprofen. The Medicines Agency alerts following cases of death abroad.
Like morphine, codeine is an opium-derived substance extracted from the plant Papaver somniferum, the soporific poppy. Used once morest pain or cough, this molecule exposes, like morphine, to a risk of abuse and dependence, which can lead to serious effects on health. The National Medicines Agency (ANSM) points to an additional danger: toxicity aggravated by the association with ibuprofen in a medicine, Antarene Codeine, in the event of prolonged use.
The reason ? « Several cases of renal, gastrointestinal and metabolic toxicity have been reported in countries where (this drug editor’s note) is available without a prescription”, informs the Agency. These cases “which sometimes led to the death of the patient, took place in situations of prolonged intake, at doses higher than the recommended doses, in a context of abuse and dependence on codeine”she says.
In effect, “ Prolonged intake of this medicine causes kidney damage (kidney failure) and a significant drop in blood potassium levels (hypokalaemia) which can cause muscle weakness and impaired consciousness., details the ANSM. Besides, “Perforations and haemorrhages in the stomach or intestines as well as severe anemia have also been observed. »
Prudence
In this context, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has therefore requested that these undesirable effects be added to the summary of product characteristics and the package leaflet.
Even if in France, all drugs containing codeine have been subject to compulsory medical prescription since 2017, the ANSM wishes to recall the risks of prolonged use. “If you feel the need to consume the drug Antarene Codeine in higher doses or for longer durations than those recommended, consult a doctor”, she advises patients.
María Isabel Urrutia: What about the Barranquilla 2027 Pan American Games?
White smoke has been dispersing on the horizon. 120 days have passed since the current Minister of Sports, María Isabel Urrutia, established, on October 20, 2020, the Technical Table of the Barranquilla 2027 Pan American Games. Something regarding which no more news has been heard.
In the presence of the representatives of the Mayor’s Office and the Governor’s Office, Daniel Trujillo (director of special projects) and Luis Restrepo (director of Indeportes), respectively, and the mayors of Malambo and Puerto Colombia, Rumenigge Monsalve and Wilman Vargas, Urrutia presented, in that occasion, Rodolfo Bossa from Cartagena as manager of the jousts. A fact that caused a lot of surprise, but that seemed like the green light from the National Government to continue the efforts and work that the District had already been organizing and developing.
EL HERALDO had the opportunity to communicate with Rodolfo Bossa to find out how the process of the Pan American Games was continuing and he found that everything is holding back. The appointment of him as manager of the jousts has not even been made official.
“My election was simply announced by the minister (María Isabel Urrutía), but it has not been made official. I understand, from the latest conversations, that it will be done this month”, were the words of Rodolfo Bossa, who kindly agreed to speak with EL HERALDO.
“Other journalists have also called me to talk regarding the issue, but I have expressed the same concern to them. I think it would be wrong for me to give statements regarding a position that I still do not have, ”he added.
Bossa, a lawyer by profession, has not been clear on the dates for the formalization of his ‘new position’, because although it depends on the choice of an entire board of directors, neither has he been specified when and how they will be able to start their work.
“They have not approached me with any official date. The information I have so far is that they plan to set up a steering committee this month. That is the procedure established in the statutes,” said the lawyer.
Finally, Bossa stressed that he has many plans in mind for the 2027 Pan American Games. However, he hopes that the appointment will be formally reconfirmed to carry out each of his proposals.
“I met a couple of times with the minister to talk regarding specific issues. We talked regarding where it was going to start and everything that would be done, but nothing of that might really be done. Without the official appointment or link, what is done or said will not be valid. We just have to wait,” concluded Bossa, who has not spoken with María Isabel Urrutia in recent days.
EL HERALDO tried to communicate with the Sports Minister to find out what happened with the appointment of the manager and what has been done regarding the Games. He answered the first call, apologized for attending a meeting, and assured that he would return the call.
However, Urrutia did not reactivate the communication. This publishing house insisted on contacting her, but received no response.
