John Tolkin scored on a penalty kick in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time to give the visiting New York Red Bulls a dramatic 1-0 Decision Day victory over Nashville SC on Saturday followingnoon.

New York qualified for the playoffs for the 14th straight season, the longest active playoff streak in major North American sports.

Carlos Coronel made four saves for his ninth clean sheet of the season for New York (11-13-10, 43 points) which finished eighth and will host ninth-place Charlotte FC in the Eastern Conference wild-card match on Wednesday night.

The playoff streak, which began in 2010, also broke a tie with the Seattle Sounders (2009-21) for the longest in MLS history.

Joe Willis finished with four saves for Nashville SC (13-11-10, 49 points) who finished in seventh place and will play second-place Orlando City in the opening round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

The Red Bulls entered stoppage time knowing they needed a goal to keep their playoff streak alive and got a major break in the 92nd minute when Nashville’s Anibal Godoy tripped midfielder Luquinhas right inside the top of the 18-yard box.

Tolkin then blasted a left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal as Willis dived to the left. It was his third goal of the season.

Both teams had excellent scoring chances in a scoreless first half that saw Nashville finish with a 4-2 edge in shots of goal.

Reigning Golden Boot winner Hany Mukhtar had a pair of good chances for Nashville, including one on a breakaway in the 16th, but Coronel made a diving finger-tip deflection on his right-footed shot from the left side of the box that caromed off the far right post.

Fafa Picault had another excellent chance for the home team in the eighth minute of stoppage time with a right-footed shot from the left-side of the six-yard box that Coronel caught.

Forward Elias Manoel had the best scoring chance for the Red Bulls in the 25th minute when he took a through pass from Luquinhas, but Willis saved his left-footed attempt from left side of the box.

Willis also made a diving two-handed grab of a Manoel right-footed shot from the middle of the box in the 50th minute.

And at the higher levels? “All work deserves a salary. And I wouldn’t want to have the life of a minister. But we need controls and transparency.”

For Nicolas Martin, political office must remain attractive. “We have to face the complexity of the work before public opinion. We can pay ministers €3,000 but we have to know the burden that that represents. Today, you no longer have anyone who wants to get involved locally. People don’t want to be exposed to network vindictiveness, pressure, etc.”

Flat tires

When Nicolas Martin talks regarding attractiveness, he also talks regarding “change political morals. Advice until 4 a.m. is not good! Legal protection must also be strengthened. If you’ve been waiting for some blues rock for the Levitt AMP Concert series, this weekend Indigenous is here to entertain Carson City.

Mato Nanji, who comes from South Dakota, fronts the band and he is known for his guitar style that is influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana.

“I grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix and a lot of the old blues guys and got a lot of influence from that,” Nanji said. “I think that’s kind of what we try to do.”

Nanji comes with an impressive resume when it comes to the other musicians he’s shared the stage with. He said one of the biggest accomplishments of his career was right in the beginning around 1999, Indigenous was asked to open for B.B. King.

“That’s when our first record came out and that was one of the highlights,” he said. “We did regarding 60 shows across the country opening for him, and then all the other folks we got to play with and hang out with has been great.”

He’s also shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and many more.

When Indigenous started, it was Nanji and three siblings — two brothers and a sister. Nanji was a teenager when the band started, and now he’s 49. He said they toured together for regarding 10 years and then went their own ways.

Nanji wanted to keep the band going since he wrote most of the songs, he said. So he kept the band name and found some replacements.

The band’s lineup now includes Bronson Begay on bass. Nanji said he’s been playing with him for a while and he’s out of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Kurt Olson is on drums. He’s from Omaha, Nebraska, and he’s been playing with Nanji for a while.

“They’re just great players and great musicians,” Nanji said. “They all have a good feel, so that’s what I like. It’s a good vibe they bring to the band.”

A new addition this past year for guitar is Nanji’s son, Evan.

“It’s been pretty awesome to have him on and playing with us,” Nanji said.

Evan is 23 and this is the first band he’s been in. Nanji said it was an easy decision making him part of the band.

“I think it brings a lot — a new feel and a new vibe to the whole thing,” Nanji said.

Nanji said this is the first time he’ll be playing in Carson City, and he’s excited for the event. He said he’s looking forward to the all-ages event outdoors, and he just played a similar event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

“I like those events, they’re cool,” he said.
