The United States is deploying the world’s largest warship to Latin America, marking a major escalation in its campaign against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean Sea.
The Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, ordered this Friday that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, with capacity for 90 aircraft, be moved from the Mediterranean to Latin American waters.
Their deployment marks a significant escalation in US military buildup in the region.
It is also likely to increase tensions with Venezuela, whose government Washington has long accused of harboring drug traffickers.
The carrier’s large aircraft load may include fighter aircraft and transport and reconnaissance aircraft. Its first long-term mission was in 2023.
It is unclear which ships will accompany the carrier as it moves to the Caribbean, but it may operate as part of a strike group that includes destroyers with missiles and other equipment.
From Venezuela, Maduro this Friday accused the United States of fabricating a case against his country and assured that he is preparing brigades to react to any threat from Washington.
“They promised that they would never get into a war again and they are inventing a war that we are going to avoid. With what? With the mobilization of the people of South America, because South America and the Caribbean, everything, says no to war, yes to peace, yes to prosperity, yes to harmony and coexistence,” he said in a televised speech.
“They invent an extravagant, vulgar, criminal and totally false story, already demonstrably false, Venezuela is a country free of coca leaf production, free of cocaine production, and we are going to achieve 100% free passage of a minuscule 5% that comes from Colombia,” he added.
The US has increased its military presence in the Caribbean in recent weeks, which until now included another eight warships, a nuclear submarine and F-35 aircraft.
The North American country has carried out air attacks against vessels that, it claims, belong to drug traffickers.
The last one was this Friday, with “six narcoterrorist men” killed in the Caribbean Sea who, according to Hegseth, belonged to the Tren de Aragua criminal organization.
Hegseth posted a video on the social network X at the time of the attack. It shows a boat being targeted which then explodes and a cloud of smoke forms.
The Pentagon announced that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford would deploy to the US Southern Command area of responsibility, which encompasses Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
The additional forces “will enhance and augment existing capabilities to disrupt drug trafficking, and reduce and dismantle transnational criminal organizations,” spokesman Sean Parnell said.
The aircraft carrier last publicly broadcast its location three days ago off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea.

The US has carried out a series of attacks on vessels in recent weeks, in what President Donald Trump has described as an effort to curb drug trafficking.
The attack reported this Friday was the tenth that the Trump administration has deployed against suspected drug traffickers since early September.
Most were in the Caribbean, but on October 21 and 22 it attacked ships in the Pacific Ocean.
Members of the US Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, have expressed concerns about the legality of the attacks and the president’s authority to order them.
On September 10, 25 Democratic US senators wrote to the White House and alleged that the US had attacked a ship days earlier “without evidence that the people on board and its cargo posed a threat” to the country.
Meanwhile, Republican Senator Rand Paul argued that such attacks require congressional approval.
Trump, who has designated the Aragua Train as a terrorist organization, claimed to have the legal authority to order the attacks.
“We have permission to do it, and if we were to do it by land, we might go to Congress,” the president told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio added: “If people want to stop seeing drug boats blow up, stop sending drugs to the US.”
The six deaths in the operation announced by Hegseth this Friday bring the total number of deaths in the US attacks to at least 43.
Analysts suggest that the attacks not only have to do with drug trafficking, but also with military pressure on the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.
Trump accuses Maduro of being the leader of a drug trafficking organization, something the Venezuelan denies.

The Electric Origins of Life: How Hydrothermal Vents Could Power the Future of Bio-Inspired Technology
Imagine a world without enzymes, without DNA, yet teeming with the very first stirrings of life. It sounds like science fiction, but a groundbreaking study recreating the conditions of early Earth suggests this is precisely how life began – not in a “primordial soup,” but powered by the natural electricity generated at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. This isn’t just a fascinating glimpse into our planet’s past; it’s a blueprint for a new era of bio-inspired technology, from sustainable energy solutions to the creation of artificial life.
From Ancient Vents to Modern Metabolism
For decades, the “primordial soup” theory – the idea that life arose from a chaotic mix of organic molecules – dominated the conversation about life’s origins. However, recent research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (2025), is challenging this notion. Scientists have successfully simulated the conditions around hydrothermal vents, demonstrating that these geological formations could have provided the energy needed to kickstart life’s fundamental chemical reactions. Specifically, they showed that these vents can generate electrochemical gradients capable of converting carbon dioxide (CO₂) into formic acid (CH₂O₂) and acetic acid (C₂H₄O₂), crucial steps in the ancient Wood-Ljungdahl pathway.
“The hypothesis is that these physicochemical contrasts present in the vicinity of the thermal vents generate a natural voltage, as occurs between the inside and outside of the mitochondria,” explains Thiago Altair Ferreira, lead author of the study and researcher at Japan’s THE KINGDOM institute. “It’s this voltage that sustains the chemical reactions.” This discovery suggests that life’s earliest metabolism wasn’t reliant on complex biological machinery, but on the simple, elegant power of inorganic chemistry.
The Hadean Eon: A Chemical Battleground
The Hadean eon, spanning the first 500 million years of Earth’s history, was a dramatically different world. Volcanic activity was rampant, meteorites bombarded the surface, and the oceans were cooler and more acidic. This harsh environment, however, was also ripe for experimentation. The interaction between the alkaline fluids erupting from hydrothermal vents and the acidic ocean water created significant temperature and pH gradients – and, crucially, a natural voltage.
This voltage wasn’t a theoretical concept. The researchers recreated these conditions using iron and nickel sulfide walls with micropores, mimicking the structure of biological membranes. These mineral barriers facilitated electron flow, driving the reduction of CO₂ into energy-rich molecules. The remarkable aspect? This process required no enzymes or organic molecules, demonstrating that life-like processes could begin with purely inorganic components.
Minerals as Proto-Enzymes
The study’s reliance on iron-sulfur (Fe–S) and iron–nickel–sulfur (Fe–Ni–S) minerals is particularly intriguing. These minerals closely resemble the metallic cores of modern enzymes, suggesting they acted as catalysts in early chemical reactions. “Iron–sulfur and iron–nickel–sulfur minerals are very similar to the metal centers we see today in various enzymes,” Ferreira notes. “This allows us to consider protometabolism – a metabolism without enzymes – as the trigger for the process.”
This finding shifts our understanding of the origins of catalysis. Instead of complex protein structures, simple minerals may have been the initial catalysts, paving the way for the evolution of more sophisticated enzymatic systems.
Future Implications: Bio-Inspired Technology and Beyond
The implications of this research extend far beyond understanding life’s origins. The principles at play – harnessing natural gradients and utilizing mineral catalysts – offer a wealth of opportunities for innovation. Here are a few potential future trends:
Sustainable Energy Production: Mimicking the electrochemical gradients of hydrothermal vents could lead to the development of novel, sustainable energy sources. Imagine bio-inspired fuel cells that utilize readily available materials and require minimal external energy input.
Carbon Capture Technologies: The ability to efficiently convert CO₂ into useful compounds, as demonstrated in the study, could revolutionize carbon capture technologies. This could offer a pathway to mitigate climate change by transforming a greenhouse gas into valuable resources.
Artificial Life and Synthetic Biology: Understanding how life arose from inorganic components could inform the creation of artificial life forms. Researchers could potentially build self-replicating systems based on mineral catalysts and electrochemical gradients.
Astrobiology and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life: The discovery that life could originate in environments without complex organic molecules expands the possibilities for where we might find life elsewhere in the universe. Hydrothermal vents are thought to exist on other celestial bodies, such as Europa and Enceladus, making them prime targets for astrobiological exploration.
The detection of nanoampere-scale electric currents powering the CO₂ reduction in the experiment is a key takeaway. These tiny currents, generated solely by the environment, demonstrate the potential for self-sustaining protometabolic systems. This echoes the energy production mechanisms found in mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, highlighting the remarkable continuity of life’s fundamental processes.
The Rise of Geobiotechnology
We may be on the cusp of a new field: geobiotechnology. This emerging discipline will focus on harnessing geological processes and materials for biotechnological applications. Think of using mineral-rich environments to cultivate microorganisms for bioremediation, or designing bio-inspired materials with unique catalytic properties.
Protometabolism refers to the chemical processes that occurred before the evolution of enzymes and complex biological machinery. It’s essentially a rudimentary form of metabolism driven by inorganic chemistry and natural energy gradients.
Where are hydrothermal vents located?
Hydrothermal vents are typically found along volcanically active areas of the ocean floor, such as mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones. They release geothermally heated water rich in dissolved minerals.
Could life have originated in other environments besides hydrothermal vents?
While hydrothermal vents are a leading candidate for the cradle of life, other environments, such as shallow ponds and impact craters, may also have played a role. The key is the presence of energy gradients and suitable chemical building blocks.
What is the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway?
The Wood-Ljungdahl pathway is an ancient metabolic pathway used by some bacteria and archaea to fix carbon dioxide. It’s considered one of the oldest biochemical pathways on Earth and is central to the study’s findings.
The discovery that life’s earliest chemistry may have been powered by simple inorganic processes is a paradigm shift. It’s a reminder that the most profound innovations often arise from understanding the fundamental principles of nature. As we continue to explore the depths of our planet and the origins of life, we may unlock even more secrets that could revolutionize technology and our understanding of the universe. The Switch 2’s Game-Key Card Gamble: A Sign of Consoles’ Evolving Future?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is already shaping up to be a console defined by compromise. While the promise of a more powerful handheld experience is exciting, the confirmed use of “Game-Key Cards” for titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows is sparking a heated debate. These cards, essentially requiring a download even with a physical purchase, aren’t just a quirky Nintendo decision – they could be a glimpse into how console manufacturers navigate the increasingly complex demands of modern game development and data delivery.
Beyond Cost: Why Game-Key Cards Are Gaining Traction
Initial reactions to Game-Key Cards centered on cost-cutting measures. However, developers are pushing back on that narrative. Star Wars Outlaws’ port developer at Ubisoft argued the cards address the Switch 2’s data read speeds, with cartridges offering faster access than internal memory. Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi echoed this sentiment, suggesting performance, not price, is the primary driver. This isn’t about saving a few pennies; it’s about maximizing the hardware’s capabilities.
This shift is crucial. As game sizes balloon – modern AAA titles routinely exceed 100GB – the limitations of physical media become increasingly apparent. Blu-ray discs, while capable, are slower than solid-state drives (SSDs). Game-Key Cards, coupled with the Switch 2’s internal storage, offer a potential middle ground: the perceived ownership of a physical product combined with the speed benefits of digital distribution. Nintendo’s recent survey probing user preferences regarding digital and physical games further underscores their active consideration of this evolving landscape.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Switch 2: A Test Case
Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ arrival on the Switch 2 is a high-profile test case for this approach. Ubisoft’s commitment to including all post-launch content, cross-progression, and touch screen support demonstrates a willingness to leverage the platform’s unique features. However, the Game-Key Card requirement adds a layer of friction for consumers accustomed to traditional cartridge-based gaming. The success of Shadows will likely influence how other developers approach physical releases on the Switch 2.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be a key test for the Switch 2’s Game-Key Card system.
The Ripple Effect: Implications for the Console Landscape
The implications extend beyond Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are already grappling with the challenges of game size and storage capacity on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. While they haven’t adopted a Game-Key Card approach, exploring alternative physical media solutions or incentivizing digital downloads could become more appealing as game sizes continue to grow. We might see a future where “physical” games are increasingly about licensing and access rather than outright ownership.
The Rise of the “Hybrid” Physical Game
Imagine a scenario where consoles ship with smaller storage capacities, relying on a combination of physical “access keys” and cloud storage. This “hybrid” model could allow developers to deliver visually stunning, feature-rich games without requiring consumers to constantly upgrade their storage. It also opens up new revenue streams through subscription services and downloadable content. This isn’t necessarily a dystopian future of limited ownership, but a shift towards a more flexible and adaptable gaming ecosystem.
Ubisoft’s Internal Shifts and the Future of AAA
The timing of these developments is also noteworthy. The recent departure of Assassin’s Creed franchise boss Marc-Alexis Côté, coupled with the transfer of the Assassin’s Creed brand to Vantage Studios (backed by Tencent), signals a potential strategic shift at Ubisoft. This restructuring, alongside Tencent’s growing influence, could lead to a greater focus on live-service games and monetization strategies, potentially impacting the future direction of the franchise and other Ubisoft properties like Far Cry and Rainbow Six.
Navigating the New Reality
The Switch 2’s Game-Key Card decision isn’t an isolated incident. It’s a symptom of a larger trend: the increasing tension between the demands of modern game development, the limitations of physical media, and the expectations of consumers. While the initial reaction may be skepticism, this approach could ultimately pave the way for more innovative and efficient gaming experiences. The key will be transparency and ensuring that consumers understand the value proposition of this evolving model.

The Next Generation of Watchdogs: How ProPublica’s Emerging Reporters Program Signals a Shift in Investigative Journalism
The number of news deserts in America – communities with limited access to local news – has exploded in the last decade, rising from roughly 900 in 2014 to over 2,200 today. This erosion of local coverage isn’t just about convenience; it’s a direct threat to accountability. But a new wave of aspiring journalists, nurtured by programs like ProPublica’s Emerging Reporters Program, offers a powerful counter-narrative, signaling a potential revitalization of investigative reporting focused on local power structures and underserved communities.
Investing in the Future of Accountability
ProPublica’s commitment to supporting emerging investigative journalists isn’t simply philanthropic; it’s a strategic investment in the future of a vital democratic function. The program, providing a $9,000 stipend, mentorship, and crucial industry connections, addresses a critical barrier to entry: the often-unpaid nature of internships and early-career opportunities. This financial support allows talented students from diverse backgrounds to dedicate themselves fully to honing their skills and pursuing impactful stories.
The program’s emphasis on mentorship – pairing students with experienced ProPublica journalists – is particularly noteworthy. In an era where institutional knowledge is often siloed, this direct transfer of expertise is invaluable. It’s not just about learning *how* to investigate, but also *where* to look, *who* to trust, and *how* to navigate the complex ethical considerations inherent in holding power accountable. The success of past Emerging Reporters, now working at outlets like The New York Times and The Associated Press, demonstrates the program’s effectiveness.
A Focus on Local, Data-Driven, and Diverse Storytelling
The composition of ProPublica’s 2025 class reveals several key trends shaping the future of investigative journalism. A strong emphasis on local news is evident, with students eager to immerse themselves in community reporting. This reflects a growing recognition that many abuses of power occur at the local level, often shielded from broader scrutiny. Kahlie Wray’s yearlong project investigating rural public health, for example, highlights this commitment to uncovering critical issues within specific communities.
Furthermore, the incoming class demonstrates a growing proficiency in data journalism. Lee Ann Anderson’s specialization in data and investigative journalism, coupled with her Carnegie-Knight News21 fellowship focusing on federal immigration policy, underscores the increasing importance of data analysis in uncovering patterns and exposing systemic issues. As Gabriel Velasquez Neira’s passion for audio and data journalism suggests, the future of investigative reporting will likely involve innovative storytelling formats that leverage the power of both mediums. You can find more information about the growing importance of data journalism here.
Perhaps most importantly, the program is attracting a diverse cohort of journalists committed to amplifying marginalized voices. Annabelle Ink’s interest in using gender as a lens to report on criminal justice, climate change, and resistance movements, and Lee Ann Anderson’s dedication to incorporating the voices of marginalized groups, signal a shift towards more inclusive and equitable reporting. This is crucial for ensuring that investigative journalism truly serves the public interest and holds all power structures accountable.
The Rise of Immersive and Collaborative Reporting
The experiences of these emerging reporters also point to a growing trend towards immersive and collaborative journalism. Kahlie Wray’s internship in the Czech Republic, reporting on religion and the expat experience, exemplifies the value of on-the-ground reporting and cultural understanding. Similarly, her collaborative project on rural public health demonstrates the power of pooling resources and expertise to tackle complex issues.
This collaborative approach is likely to become increasingly important as news organizations face shrinking budgets and limited resources. By partnering with other journalists, academic institutions, and community organizations, investigative reporters can expand their reach and impact. Safa Wahidi’s passion for local government and community involvement further reinforces this trend, suggesting a future where journalists are deeply embedded within the communities they serve.
What Does This Mean for the Future of News?
The success of programs like ProPublica’s Emerging Reporters Program isn’t just a win for the individual journalists involved; it’s a signal of hope for the future of investigative journalism. By investing in the next generation of watchdogs, and by fostering a commitment to local, data-driven, and diverse storytelling, we can begin to rebuild trust in the media and strengthen the foundations of our democracy. The challenge now is to scale these efforts and ensure that all communities have access to the investigative reporting they deserve.
