PHOENIX, AZ – Alexander Rossi and Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR) are signaling their intent for the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, topping the speed charts at the conclusion of the two-day Unser INDYCAR Open Test at Phoenix Raceway on Wednesday. Rossi, piloting the No. 20 ECR Java House Chevrolet, recorded the fastest lap of the test at 174.542 mph, a promising sign as the series returns to the one-mile oval after a hiatus since 2018.
The strong performance at Phoenix comes as Rossi looks to break a lengthy oval victory drought. His last win on an oval circuit came in August 2018 at Pocono Raceway, a span of over seven years. The test results suggest a potential end to that wait when the Good Ranchers 250 takes place on Saturday, March 7.
Rossi’s success wasn’t a one-off; he also led both sessions on Wednesday, demonstrating consistent speed. “We got through everything we wanted and when you can do that, it’s a good day,” Rossi said. He also highlighted the strength of his teammate, Christian Rasmussen, adding, “Christian’s car is also strong, so there’s nothing more I could ask for.”
All 25 drivers expected to compete in the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, March 1, participated in the test, utilizing the opportunity to refine setups for the upcoming season. The test served as a crucial preparation period for the return of oval racing to Phoenix, a track that hasn’t hosted an INDYCAR SERIES event since 2018.
ECR Dominates Testing, Newgarden Close Behind
ECR’s performance wasn’t limited to Rossi. Rasmussen secured a strong second-place finish in the afternoon session with a lap of 173.924 mph, contributing to a dominant showing for the team. Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden, driving the No. 2 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet, finished second overall with a lap of 174.362 mph, set during the morning session. Newgarden was also the second-fastest driver on Tuesday’s opening day of the test, posting a 172.201 mph lap behind teammate David Malukas.
Reigning and four-time series champion Alex Palou rounded out the top three recording a lap of 174.220 mph in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Malukas continued to impress in his early days with Team Penske, finishing fifth overall with a speed of 173.759 mph.
Schumacher Shows Promise, Ericsson Involved in Incident
The test also provided valuable track time for newcomers, including Formula One veteran Mick Schumacher. Schumacher, driving the No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda, was the fastest rookie over both days, improving his lap time by over 7 mph from Tuesday to Wednesday, ultimately reaching 171.096 mph.
The test wasn’t without incident. 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson experienced a minor incident 49 minutes into the afternoon session, spinning in Turn 4 and making contact with the SAFER Barrier in his No. 28 Delaware Life Honda fielded by Andretti Global. Ericsson was uninjured.
Over the two days of testing, a total of 4,853 laps were completed by all 25 drivers. Series veteran Will Power, now driving for Andretti Global after 16 seasons with Team Penske, led all drivers in laps completed, turning 259 laps – exceeding the race distance scheduled for March 7.
Looking Ahead to St. Petersburg
The Unser INDYCAR Open Test at Phoenix provided valuable data and insights as teams prepare for the 2026 season. The focus now shifts to the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 1, the official start of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. The performance at Phoenix suggests that ECR, with Rossi and Rasmussen leading the charge, will be a strong contender throughout the year.
What remains to be seen is how these testing results translate to race conditions. The unique challenges of street course racing in St. Petersburg will present a different set of variables, but the momentum gained at Phoenix undoubtedly provides a positive foundation for the season ahead.
