The England women’s deaf football team, affectionately known as the Para Lionesses, has arrived in Croatia, gearing up for the European Championship Finals. This tournament marks a significant opportunity for the squad, who will kick off their group stage against Poland on Tuesday, March 10, at 2:30 PM GMT. They will continue their campaign against Italy on March 12, Switzerland on March 14 and France on March 15.
Captain Zara Musker expressed her enthusiasm ahead of the tournament, highlighting the team’s motivation following their near-miss at last year’s World Cup. “The girls went out to the World Cup last year and they were amazing but we fell just short and we didn’t get what we wanted,” said Musker. “But that’s given us more motivation this time to go one better.” She emphasized the benefits of their recent training camp in Tenerife, which provided valuable time for team bonding and preparation.
“We’re ready technically, tactically, physically, and mentally,” Musker stated, noting the close-knit nature of the team. “We’re like a family and I suppose when you’re in para football, when you’re around people that have the same sort of disabilities and challenges in daily life, you have that special bond. We’re just so excited to get on the court and hopefully put everything into practice that we’ve been doing over the last two years.” She also acknowledged the contributions of the support staff, saying, “It’s a massive team effort.”
Introducing the Squad
In Porec, the Lionesses will be represented by a 13-player squad. Here’s a closer gaze at some of the key players:
Ellie Betteridge
A relatively new addition to the team, Betteridge has made a significant impact in her year with the squad. “Her technical and tactical skills have really sort of helped us elevate as a team,” Musker noted.
Kate Bowers
Bowers recently returned from an ACL injury and brings not only goal-scoring prowess but also invaluable experience. “I think all the girls look up to her,” Musker said.
Emma Brown
As one of the original team members, Brown has transitioned from an outfield player to a goalkeeper. “Her experience of Futsal really helps in those games where it gets a little bit tough,” said Musker.
Danielle Evans
Evans, another long-standing member, serves as the vice-captain and provides a calming presence on the team. “She just brings that calmness to the group,” Musker mentioned.
Natasha Hamm
New to the squad, Hamm is expected to play a crucial role as a goalkeeper, bringing her shot-stopping experience to the tournament.
Louise Hogan
Hogan is known for her passion and determination, often seen as a driving force during challenging moments on the court.
Lucindha Lawson
Lawson’s improvement has been notable, as she continues to develop her skills and contribute to team dynamics.
Sophie Murnagh
As one of the newest members, Murnagh will be experiencing tournament football with England for the first time, marking a significant achievement in her young career.
Maisie O’Shea
O’Shea has been a close companion to Musker and is seen as one of the most tactically astute players on the team.
Lucy Scholes
Scholes is recognized for her ability to bring the team together and maintain a positive atmosphere.
Faye Williams
With extensive experience, Williams is expected to be a key player capable of scoring in critical situations.
Macie White
A promising young player, White has shown tremendous growth in her Futsal journey and is viewed as a potential future leader for the team.
Zara Musker
As captain, Musker missed last year’s tournament due to injury but is now ready to lead the team, emphasizing the importance of representation in para football. “We’re trying to show people that there’s a pathway, and there are opportunities out there,” she said. “I live my life by being the role model I never had.”
Looking Ahead
The Para Lionesses are set to make their mark in Croatia, with their first match against Poland on March 10. Fans and supporters are encouraged to follow the team’s journey as they aim for European Championship glory.
As the tournament progresses, the squad hopes to inspire young athletes and demonstrate the potential within para football. Fans can stay updated on matches and team news via official channels.
