American chess grandmaster and popular commentator on the game Daniel Naroditsky has died at age 29.

The family announced his “unexpected” death in a statement released Monday by his club, the Charlotte Chess Center. The cause of death was not revealed.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Daniel Naroditsky,” the note said, adding that he was “a much-loved member of the chess community, admired and respected by fans and players around the world.”

Naroditsky was known online for his YouTube channel dedicated to chess, where he offered tutorials and live streams of games against other players.

It inspired hundreds of thousands of people around the world to get into the game.

On YouTube he had almost 500,000 subscribers, while on his Twitch channel he had 340,000.

Fans praised his insight and passion. They called her Danya informally.

It played a “pivotal role in popularizing online chess content,” the International Chess Federation said.

“It’s a big loss for the chess world,” world number two Hikaru Nakamura said in a social media post.

Nakamura was a close friend of Naroditsky and told the BBC that the young man “inspired hundreds of thousands of people to play chess. Many people loved his videos.”

“When it came to creating chess content to help beginners, he was the best.

“I have played more than a thousand chess games with Danie… Chess is a very competitive world and emotions run high, but Daniel always remained calm,” he added.

Creating online content “wasn’t about money for him,” Nakamura said. “He had a real passion for the game.”

Naroditsky first became interested in chess at age 6, when his older brother, Alan, asked him to help entertain a group of children at a birthday party.

His father, Vladimir, and several coaches soon noticed his talent.

“As far as I’m concerned, I was just playing with my brother,” Naroditsky told the newspaper. The New York Times in an interview in 2022.

He rose to international fame in 2007 when he won the Men’s Under-12 World Youth Championship in Antalya, Türkiye.

At the age of 14, he published a book titled Mastering Positional Chess (“Mastering Positional Chess”), about practical skills and technical maneuvers in the game.

He earned the title of grandmaster, the international chess federation’s highest-ranked chess competitor, while still a teenager after winning the 2013 US Junior Championship.

Naroditsky later graduated from Stanford University and worked as a chess coach in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In 2022, The New York Times hired him as a chess columnist and asked him to contribute to a series of chess puzzles for his games section.

“Even at my level, I still discover beautiful things about the game every time I coach, teach, play or commentate at a tournament,” Naroditsky told the newspaper at the time.

“It made chess fun”

In the world of chess content creation, Naroditsky was known “for his nightly broadcasts, his quick games and for being an exceptional blitz chess player,” his friend and fellow chess player Nemo Zhou told the BBC.

The chess grandmaster from Toronto (Canada) and content creator also said that Naroditsky was a “source of inspiration.”

Both played both in person and virtually, at chess events across the United States.

“He had a way of making chess fun,” he said.

He added that he was known to be a “true historian of the game”, with a great memory for facts about chess and historical games, and that he “did everything with kindness”.

“Without people like him, I probably would have quit chess at 17 and never touched it again,” he said.

After news of his death broke, hundreds of chess fans who admired his way of playing and his video tutorials paid tribute to Naroditsky.

Zara Graham, a 20-year-old Briton, told the BBC that it was Naroditsky’s videos that inspired her to play regularly.

“Although I never met him in person, I was absolutely devastated when I heard the news,” she said.

“I actually cried when I found out. He was a brilliant chess teacher who inspired me to start playing when I was 14. He explained things in his YouTube videos in a way that everyone could understand.

“He influenced thousands of people around the world.”
