Netflix is doubling down on its foray into live sports, announcing a high-profile boxing rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. The bout, scheduled for September 19 at the newly opened Sphere venue in Las Vegas, will be streamed globally on the platform, marking another significant step in Netflix’s strategy to attract and retain subscribers through live events.
The upcoming fight revisits one of boxing’s most anticipated – and debated – matchups. The first encounter between Mayweather and Pacquiao in 2015 generated immense hype, billed as the “Fight of the Century,” and remains the most lucrative boxing event in history, drawing a live gate of $72 million, and 4.6 million pay-per-view buys, according to multiple reports. Even as the fight itself didn’t entirely live up to the pre-fight billing, its commercial success cemented its place in boxing lore.
The rematch will be jointly produced by EverWonder Studio, Hidden Empire, and Limitless X Holdings, with Manny Pacquiao Promotions and Mayweather Promotions co-promoting alongside CSI Sports/Fight Sports. Netflix will offer the fight to all subscription tiers at no additional cost, a move designed to broaden the event’s reach. Manny Pacquiao Promotions CEO Jas Arthur stated, “Their first fight generated over $600 million in global revenue and became the highest-grossing pay-per-view in boxing history. This rematch will once again command a worldwide audience, becoming (without a doubt) the most-watched boxing event in Netflix Sports history.”
Netflix’s increasing investment in combat sports is evident in its recent track record. In December, the platform broadcast the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match, attracting a global audience of over 30 million viewers, with an average minute audience (AMA) of 33 million, as Joshua secured a sixth-round knockout. Prior to that, the November 2024 bout between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson garnered over 60 million household views worldwide. That event also featured a co-main event between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, watched by nearly 50 million households. Netflix described Taylor’s victory as “likely to be the most-watched professional women’s sporting event in US history.”
The streaming giant’s expansion into combat sports extends beyond boxing. Netflix recently announced a partnership with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) to broadcast mixed martial arts (MMA) events, beginning with the Rousey vs. Carano bout on May 16.
The Fighters’ Current Status
Both Mayweather, currently 49 years old, and Pacquiao, 47, are well past their prime. Mayweather officially retired in 2017 but has remained active with exhibition bouts and recently signed a multi-fight agreement with CSI Sports, with an exhibition against Mike Tyson planned prior to the Pacquiao rematch. Pacquiao, who served as a senator in the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, has continued to box, most recently competing in a split draw against Mario Barrios in July 2025 for the WBC Welterweight title. He has also pursued interests in professional basketball and holds a position as vice president of the International Boxing Association amateur body.
Sphere as the Venue
The choice of the Sphere in Las Vegas as the venue is noteworthy. The Sphere, known for its immersive visual and audio technology, offers a unique setting for a boxing match and is expected to enhance the viewing experience for both live attendees and those watching on Netflix. This will be the first professional boxing event held at the venue.
Netflix’s strategy of offering live sports content at no extra charge to subscribers differentiates it from traditional pay-per-view models and aims to attract a broader audience. The success of previous events, like Joshua vs. Paul, demonstrates the platform’s potential to capture a significant share of the combat sports market.
As Mayweather and Pacquiao prepare for their rematch, questions remain about their physical capabilities at their respective ages. However, the historical significance of their rivalry and Netflix’s global reach ensure that this event will generate substantial interest. The September 19 bout represents a continued effort by Netflix to establish itself as a major player in the live sports landscape.
The upcoming fight promises to be a compelling event for boxing fans worldwide. With Netflix’s global platform and the enduring appeal of Mayweather and Pacquiao, the rematch is poised to draw a massive audience and further solidify Netflix’s position in the competitive world of live sports streaming.
