The world synod of Catholic bishops from all over the world ended on Sunday with a solemn service with Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Basilica. For a good three weeks, more than 400 bishops, priests, laypeople, theologians and religious, sent by the local churches and appointed by the Pope, discussed the future of the church. For the first time at a synod of the universal Catholic Church, non-bishops and non-priests, including around fifty women, also had a say and the right to vote. Most of the female participants eligible to vote were women religious.
