Celtics’ Tatum Misses Thunder Game Due to Achilles Injury Management

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum will miss Thursday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team announced via its injury report. The absence comes as Tatum continues to manage his recovery from a ruptured right Achilles tendon, an injury that sidelined him for the majority of the regular season. This marks the first game Tatum will miss since his highly anticipated return to the court against the Dallas Mavericks last Friday.

Tatum has been on a minutes restriction since his return, playing a total of 27 minutes in each of his three games back. Whereas he’s averaging 19.7 points per game, his shooting percentages have been below his usual standards, connecting on 39.3% of his field goal attempts and just 29% from beyond the three-point line. Coaches and Tatum himself have acknowledged he is still working to regain his full form.

The Celtics (43-22) are 2-1 since Tatum rejoined the lineup, securing double-digit victories over the Mavericks and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but falling to the San Antonio Spurs after Jaylen Brown’s ejection. Thursday’s contest presents a significant challenge against the Thunder (51-15), the current leaders of the NBA and defending champions.

Fortunately for Boston, Payton Pritchard, who was sidelined Tuesday with a neck issue, is expected to return against Oklahoma City. However, Derrick White remains questionable with a right knee contusion, after scoring a game-high 34 points against the Spurs.

The Thunder boast a 27-6 record at home this season and have won nine of their last ten games. This will be the first of two matchups between the Celtics and the Thunder this month, with the second scheduled for March 25th at TD Garden. The game against OKC, which will be broadcast on Prime Video, concludes the Celtics’ current road trip before they return home for a three-game homestand beginning with a game against the Washington Wizards on Saturday.

Tatum’s Return: A Gradual Process

Since returning to action, Tatum has shown flashes of his scoring prowess, but has acknowledged his overall game is still a function in progress. He has yet to record a blocked shot this season, and his rebounding numbers have dipped slightly compared to his pre-injury averages. He grabbed 12 rebounds in his return against the Mavericks, but has averaged fewer in subsequent games.

Celtics Standings and Thunder Dominance

The Celtics currently hold the second seed in the Eastern Conference, trailing only the Detroit Pistons. Their record of 43-22 places them fourth overall in the NBA. The Thunder, with their impressive 51-15 record, have established themselves as the team to beat in the league, demonstrating their championship caliber throughout the season.

As Tatum continues to work his way back to full strength, the Celtics will need to rely on contributions from other key players like Jaylen Brown and Derrick White to remain competitive against top opponents like the Thunder. The team’s success will depend on a collective effort as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season and prepare for the playoffs.

The Celtics will continue to monitor Tatum’s progress and adjust his workload accordingly. The focus remains on ensuring his long-term health and maximizing his impact as the team pursues a championship run. Fans can expect further updates on Tatum’s status as the season progresses.
