SHINee member Key recently shared a deeply personal story revealing a touching birthday tradition connected to his grandmother. The revelation came during an appearance on the MBC entertainment program ‘I live Alone’ on September 19th.

A family Legacy of Service and Remembrance

Key visited the National Yeongcheon Hogukwon, a war memorial, to pay respects to his family members who served during the korean and Vietnam wars. He explained that his grandfather participated in the Korean War,while another grandfather served in vietnam.

His early childhood was considerably shaped by time spent with his grandparents, filling a void while his parents were working. Key fondly recalled that September holds a special meaning,marking both his birthday and his grandmother’s.

The Gomtang Tradition: A 13-Year Commitment

Following a celebratory outing with his mother in Daegu, Key received a birthday cake, a cash gift, and a heartfelt letter from her. A central element of the celebration was a traditional Korean soup, Gomtang, prepared using his grandmother’s cherished recipe.

For the past 13 years, Key has diligently continued to make Gomtang according to his grandmother’s recipe, preserving a beloved family tradition. this practice stands as a testament to his deep affection and respect.
