Crémant, prosecco or even cava, sparkling wines are popular, especially during the holiday season. Among these drinks, champagne stands out. Often more expensive, it serves as a more luxurious, nobler product. But is price a good indicator of quality? We did the test, blindly, with the sommelier of a large restaurant.

By the sound, no difference with champagne. Neither does the color and the dress. Crémant, prosecco and other cavas are attracting consumers and are taking up more and more space on the shelves.

Hubert is the owner of one of the largest wine estates in Belgium and to transform the raw material into “bubble” wine, he uses the same method as for champagne: taking the foam. “We will take the bottles and we will put them in a tray of ice which will allow us to capture and put on ice everything that is yeast and ferments.“, explains the director of the Chant d’Eole estate.

A know-how similar to the greatest Champagne houses. So why are some champagnes more expensive? A question of quality?

The test

To answer these questions, we organized a blind tasting with Hugues De Cuyper, sommelier in a large restaurant. Verdict following a few glasses: some champagnes do not justify their price.

As with all luxury products, there is a brand effect. These are the brands that maintain the fact that champagne is so expensive“, underlines the specialist.

In 2022, Crémants from Burgundy and Alsace have broken records. 24 million bottles sold for the first, 40 million for the second. Impressive figures which are, despite everything, still far behind the prestigious champagne with 320 million bottles produced per year.
