Changan Automobile is ramping up its European preparations, subjecting its vehicles to rigorous winter testing conditions while simultaneously outlining an ambitious expansion plan for the region. The Chinese automaker recently concluded extreme cold weather tests in Yakeshi, China and followed that with a February debut of its winter testing program in Europe, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring vehicle performance in challenging climates. This push coincides with plans to introduce the all-new Changan E06 – known as the Q05 in China – to the European market by the complete of 2026.
The testing season, focused on snow and ice performance, is a critical step for Changan as it prepares to compete in the European automotive landscape. The company aims to launch eight new models in Europe over the next three years, alongside plug-in hybrid versions of existing models, a strategy designed to navigate evolving EU tariffs on electric vehicles from China. This model offensive represents a significant investment of two billion euros by 2030, according to statements made by Wang Dong, Deputy Managing Director of Changan Europe.
European Debut of the Changan E06
The Changan E06, a small electric SUV, is slated to arrive in Europe as the third fully electric model in Changan’s European portfolio. The vehicle boasts a dynamic European design and a spacious interior, aiming to appeal to family-oriented buyers. Changan states the E06 will offer a driving range of up to 450 kilometers (approximately 279 miles) based on the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) standard. The vehicle utilizes a lithium-iron-phosphate battery, a technology increasingly favored for its safety and longevity.
Ethan Yin, Executive Deputy General Manager of Changan Europe Business Unit, emphasized the importance of the E06, stating, “The Changan E06 represents another important step in strengthening our presence in Europe. As the latest member of the Changan product portfolio, our new all-electric small SUV underscores our commitment to providing accessible and innovative mobility for everyday needs.”
Broader European Expansion Plans
Beyond the E06, Changan is diversifying its European strategy with vehicles planned under its Deepal, Nevo, and Avatr brands. The Deepal brand will witness the launch of the G318 SUV, the L07 saloon, and the S09 large van. Plug-in hybrid variants of the Deepal S05 and S07 models are also planned, allowing Changan to circumvent potential EU tariffs. The Nevo brand is set to introduce a small hatchback, a small SUV (the Q05), and a full hybrid model within the next three years. Finally, the premium Avatr brand will introduce two models in select European countries.
This expansion builds on Changan’s initial focus on battery-electric vehicles under the Deepal brand. The company showcased models from its sub-brands Avatr and Nevo at a European launch event in Mainz in spring 2025, signaling its intent to offer a broader range of options to European consumers. Changan’s strategy reflects a growing trend among Chinese automakers to establish a significant foothold in the European market, mirroring the success seen by brands like MG and BYD.
Navigating Tariffs and Market Competition
The introduction of plug-in hybrid models is a strategic move by Changan to address potential EU tariffs on fully electric vehicles imported from China. By offering both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid options, the company aims to provide consumers with greater choice while mitigating the impact of trade regulations. The company is investing heavily in its European operations, aiming to match the market penetration achieved by established brands.
Changan’s commitment to rigorous testing, coupled with its diverse product roadmap, suggests a serious intent to turn into a major player in the European automotive market. The company’s success will depend on its ability to deliver vehicles that meet European safety standards, consumer preferences, and evolving regulatory requirements.
As Changan progresses with its European expansion, the coming months will be crucial in establishing brand recognition and building a robust sales network. The launch of the E06 in late 2026 will be a key milestone, and the performance of its plug-in hybrid models will be closely watched as the company navigates the complexities of the European automotive landscape.
