Charles-Le Moyne Hospital: a new device to treat cancer

A new radiotherapy machine that would make it possible to treat more cancer patients has been installed at Charles-Le Moyne Hospital in Longueuil, making it the first hospital in Canada to obtain such technology.

The Accuray Radixact System is a device used to treat the majority of cancers and might therefore benefit patients with head and neck cancers, but also skin, breast, thoracic, digestive, gynecological and genitourinary cancers (including the prostate).

It would thus be more precise than an older generation device, allowing it to irradiate tumors while reducing the effects on healthy tissues.

“In other words, the precision of the device makes it possible to minimize the collateral effects of treatments,” explained the office of Minister of Health Christian Dubé.

Faster, this device helps to increase the number of patients who can be treated daily and therefore reduce waiting lists in Montérégie.

Charles-Le Moyne Hospital should receive a second device of this type towards the end of spring.
