The Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) has once again achieved reaccreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), a testament to its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality emergency services and upholding the highest standards of professionalism. The announcement, made on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, recognizes the department’s dedication to excellence, accountability, and community service.
This reaccreditation follows a rigorous review process evaluating Charlotte Fire’s operations, strategic planning, training programs, and overall service delivery. The CFAI assessment examines over 200 performance criteria across 11 key categories, measuring the effectiveness of a fire department in serving its community and managing its resources. Maintaining this accreditation demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement and best practices in the fire service.
Protecting approximately 923,000 residents across 328 square miles, the Charlotte Fire Department responded to more than 125,000 emergencies last year, according to department figures. The CFD operates a substantial force, including 46 firehouses, 46 engine companies, 20 ladder companies, two heavy rescue units, and six aircraft rescue and firefighting units, staffed by over 1,300 personnel.
“This reaccreditation reflects the professionalism and dedication of the men and women of Charlotte Fire,” said Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson. “Our members function every day to serve this community with pride, and this recognition confirms the high standards we hold ourselves to in protecting the people who live, work, and visit Charlotte.”
The CFAI accreditation process is voluntary and requires fire departments to conduct a thorough self-assessment and demonstrate adherence to nationally recognized best practices for emergency service organizations. Charlotte Fire is among only 334 fire departments worldwide to currently hold this distinction, achieving reaccreditation for the sixth consecutive time.
National Recognition for Charlotte Fire
Nationwide, approximately 14 percent of the U.S. Population is protected by an accredited fire department, and an even smaller percentage benefits from the services of departments that are both internationally accredited and maintain an ISO Class 1 rating. Charlotte Fire proudly holds both distinctions, signifying an exceptional level of preparedness and service delivery. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 rating reflects the department’s superior capabilities in fire suppression, emergency communications, comprehensive training, and reliable water supply. Public incident reports from the Charlotte Fire Department are available online.
The reaccreditation process isn’t merely a validation of current practices; it too serves as a catalyst for identifying areas for improvement and strengthening service delivery. Charlotte Fire leaders emphasize their commitment to utilizing the accreditation model as a continuous framework for evaluation and enhancement.
“This process challenges us to glance closely at everything we do,” Johnson said. “It ensures we remain focused on continuous improvement and delivering the highest level of service to the Charlotte community.”
Ongoing Commitment to Excellence
The CFAI hearings, where the reaccreditation was formally acknowledged, took place at the CPSE Excellence Conference in Orlando, Florida, from March 10-12, 2026. Details of the conference schedule are available on the Center for Public Safety Excellence website.
Looking ahead, Charlotte Fire will continue to leverage the CFAI accreditation model to refine its operations and ensure it remains at the forefront of emergency service delivery. The department’s ongoing commitment to training, technology, and community engagement will be crucial in maintaining its high standards and responding effectively to the evolving needs of the city.
