ChatGPT Ads: OpenAI Launches Ads Manager & $200K Minimum Spend

OpenAI has begun testing an Ads Manager, a dashboard designed to allow marketers to run, monitor, and optimize advertising campaigns within ChatGPT, the company confirmed to Adweek. The move signals a significant step toward monetizing the popular artificial intelligence chatbot, which currently boasts over 800 million users, according to OpenAI.

The Ads Manager rollout is initially limited to a small group of advertising partners, with OpenAI actively soliciting feedback on the platform’s functionality. Advertisers participating in the beta program are receiving weekly reports in Comma Separated Values (CSV) format, detailing campaign performance metrics such as clicks and impressions.

Although, access to the advertising program comes at a substantial cost. OpenAI is reportedly requesting that select advertisers commit to upfront spending of at least $200,000, with proposals ranging from $100,000 to $250,000, according to reports. The pricing model diverges from those used by established digital advertising platforms like Google and Amazon, with ads sold on a cost-per-mille (CPM) basis – charging $60 for every 1,000 impressions – rather than a performance-based model tied to clicks.

The introduction of advertising is intended to support free access to ChatGPT, OpenAI CEO of applications Fidji Simo stated in a social media post. The company emphasized that advertisements will be clearly labeled and separated from the chatbot’s organic responses, and that ads “will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.”

OpenAI’s foray into advertising places it in direct competition with digital advertising giants Google and Meta, both of which already integrate ads into their own AI-powered features. The company, originally founded as a non-profit, reorganized its structure last year and is now operating as a public benefit corporation. The pursuit of advertising revenue is presented as a means of supporting its original mission to ensure AI technology benefits humanity.

The substantial financial commitment required of early advertisers suggests OpenAI is focused on securing partnerships with large brands capable of driving significant revenue. The company’s success in proving the effectiveness of its advertising platform will be crucial, particularly given the high buy-in threshold.

OpenAI plans to initiate testing the ads in the coming weeks, according to a company announcement.
