AI’s Hidden Bias: Why ChatGPT is Telling Women to Earn Less

That’s the average salary difference a recent study found between advice given by large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to men and women with identical qualifications. Researchers at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) in Germany, led by Professor Ivan Yamshchikov, meticulously tested five popular LLMs, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Their methodology was simple yet revealing: they presented the models with identical user profiles, differing only in gender, and asked for salary negotiation advice. The results were stark. ChatGPT consistently suggested lower salary targets for female applicants, even when their experience, education, and desired role mirrored their male counterparts.
“The difference in the prompts is two letters, the difference in the ‘advice’ is $120K a year,” Yamshchikov noted, highlighting the absurdity of the disparity. The bias was particularly pronounced in high-earning fields like law and medicine, extending to business administration and engineering. Interestingly, the social sciences showed less of a gendered difference in the AI’s recommendations.
Beyond Salary: A Systemic Pattern of Bias
This isn’t an isolated incident. The THWS study went further, examining how LLMs advise on career choices, goal-setting, and even behavioral strategies. Across all areas, the models exhibited a tendency to offer different guidance based solely on the user’s gender, despite identical input. This echoes past failures in AI development. Amazon famously scrapped a recruiting tool in 2018 after it was discovered to systematically downgrade female candidates. More recently, a machine learning model used in healthcare was found to underdiagnose conditions in women and Black patients due to biased training data. These examples demonstrate a recurring problem: AI isn’t neutral; it reflects the biases present in the data it learns from.
