Chaussée d’Ixelles Traffic Restrictions: Criticisms, Fines, and Revenue Generation Explained

Since 2018, the Chaussée d’Ixelles has become semi-pedestrian with a bus line and a traffic ban for cars during the day, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Certain categories of vehicles, such as those of local residents with a garage and certain suppliers, benefit from an exception to this rule. This situation quickly gave rise to numerous criticisms: faced with the lack of clarity of the rules, numerous fines are imposed on motorists by ANPR cameras.

Over the first three months following the implementation of the semi-pedestrian in 2018, more than 15,000 administrative sanctions amounting to 58 euros were issued, for a total sum approaching one million euros. Since then, the number of fines has averaged 70,000 per year, which generates around 4.2 million euros in annual revenue for the municipality. According to municipal councilor Geoffroy Kensier, the total amount of revenue from 2018 to 2023 inclusive might exceed 22 million euros, according to the Echo.
