“The way they got to the coastline does not seem to us. When you arrive in a country you have to respect the rules of coexistence, and I think they did not respect it”, said Miguel Angel Quezada, mayor of the Tarapacá region, in northern Chile, where the coast of Iquique is located.
For months, that coastal strip has received Venezuelan migrants who enter illegally through the Colchane border on a daily basis.
30 armed subjects entered the University of Zulia and threw a guard from the second floor
Quezada stressed that the authorities are taking steps with the International Organization for Migration and non-governmental organizations to provide a decent shelter for migrants.
“We are working with IOM and other NGOs to give them some form of shelter, where they can have toilets and reside while they solve their problem,” he said.
