Beijing: China and Syria announce strategic partnership. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reached an agreement on Friday, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported. The leaders met ahead of the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, which Assad will attend as part of his first visit to China since 2004.

Xi Jinping said that the strategic partnership between the two countries will become an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations. He said China supports Syria in opposing foreign interference and unilateral threats, and safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Assad’s visit would help take relations between the two countries to a new level. Analysts say Assad’s visit is an important step back into the international arena following years of US-led isolation.

China is strengthening its diplomatic influence in West Asia. Her effective intervention to restore Iran-Saudi relations was noted. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi are visiting China this year.
