China-Iran Trade Relations and Houthi Attacks on Ships in the Red Sea

Officials in China have asked their Iranian counterparts to help curb attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen on ships in the Red Sea, as these attacks threaten to harm Tehran’s trade relations with Beijing. This request came following an increase in shipping and insurance costs as a result of the disruption of the main transport lines, which constitute the trade route between Asia and Europe.

According to four Iranian sources and a diplomatic source, discussions regarding the Houthi attacks and trade relations between China and Iran took place in several meetings in Beijing and Tehran. One of the sources reported, “China asked Iran to inform the Houthis of restraint, indicating that if China’s interests are harmed in any way, this will negatively affect its relations with Tehran.”

Against the backdrop of repeated attacks once morest the Houthis by the coalition led by the United States and Britain, the organization’s spiritual leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, today (Thursday), directed a new threat towards Israel.

He told local media, saying: “Israel did not succeed in breaking the resolve of the Palestinians and did not achieve any of its goals in the Gaza Strip. We will not stand idly by while the Palestinians suffer from the Israeli-American aggression.”
