China’s annual Spring Festival travel season, known as Chunyun, is experiencing a significant surge in return travelers, with over 310 million train tickets sold as of February 21st, according to the latest data from China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. This year’s Chunyun is seeing a particularly high volume of passengers as people return home after the Lunar New Year holiday, with an estimated 16.8 million passengers expected to travel by rail on February 21st alone.
The peak of the return travel period is now underway, placing considerable strain on the nation’s rail network. To accommodate the increased demand, railway authorities have planned to add 2,052 extra passenger trains on February 21st, building on the 1,469 additional trains scheduled for February 20th, when 15.372 million passengers were transported safely and efficiently. As of 8:00 AM on February 21st, railway ticket sales through the 12306 platform (including website and app) exceeded 310 million for the entire Chunyun period.
Popular departure cities include Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Shanghai, Xi’an, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. Arrival destinations are mirroring these hubs, with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing, Xi’an, and Zhengzhou seeing the highest influx of travelers. Several key routes are experiencing particularly high demand, including travel from Nanning to Guangzhou, Beijing to Shanghai, Shenyang to Beijing, Wuhan to Shanghai, Wuhan to Shenzhen, between Xi’an and Chengdu, and from Wuhan to Guangzhou.
Despite the high volume of travelers, some routes still have available tickets. From February 22nd to 23rd, passengers may find seats on trains traveling from Shanghai to Xuzhou, Hefei, Wenzhou, Zhengzhou, and Changsha. Routes from Guangzhou to Nanning and Changsha, as well as Shenzhen to Changsha and Hangzhou to Fuyang, also report available seating. Longer-distance routes, such as Beijing to Harbin, Zhengzhou, Baotou, and Hohhot, as well as from Fuzhou to Beijing, also have remaining tickets.
Looking ahead to February 24th through March 3rd, routes including Beijing to Shanghai, Shanghai to Wenzhou and Xuzhou, Changsha to Shenzhen, and Shanghai to Hefei and Wuhan are expected to have available seats. Travelers may also find tickets on routes from Beijing to Taiyuan and Handan, Fuzhou to Beijing, Shanghai to Fuyang and Shenzhen, Kunming to Chengdu, Hangzhou to Hefei, Shenyang to Harbin, Guiyang to Kunming, and Hefei to Wenzhou.
Railway authorities are advising passengers to stay informed about travel updates and weather conditions, to allow ample time for travel to stations, and to adhere to regulations regarding baggage and ticket information.
