Belgian painter Christian Silvain has won a plagiarism lawsuit in China. A Beijing court has ordered artist Ye Yongqing to pay 650,000 euros in damages, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg reported on Friday.

Ye Yongqing has built a flourishing career by plagiarizing the works of Christian Silvain. His works have been sold at auction for sums of up to 600,000 euros in the biggest auctions.

Ye Yongqing would have discovered the Belgian’s work during an exhibition in Paris in the 1990s. He would have obtained a catalog there which he would have started to copy. It took until early 2019 for Mr. Ye to fall from his pedestal. The state-run China Daily newspaper calculated that Ye Yongqing’s works had earned nearly US$15 million at the time.

A Beijing court ordered Mr. Ye to pay 650,000 euros in damages and to issue a public apology in the newspaper.
