Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday (26th).

This is the first time President Xi has communicated directly with President Zelensky since the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February last year.

China’s state-run Central Television reported that Xi stressed that China’s key position in the Ukraine crisis is to encourage and urge talks, and that “dialogue and negotiations are the only viable exit.”

Xi hinted at mediation diplomacy by sending the Chinese government’s special representative for Eurasia affairs to Ukraine and elsewhere to communicate with each side for a political solution.
