Are children’s sunscreens dangerous for the health of our little ones? Yes, according to two environmental protection associations which are asking ANSES for a “benefit / risk” assessment: by studying more than 70 children’s sunscreen products, they have revealed the presence of many substances deemed to be of concern, such as endocrine disruptors, allergens, carcinogens or neurotoxicants.
When packing up for the holidays, parents usually don’t forget sunscreen to protect their children’s skin. But how to choose it well? If we can a priori trusting their promise of effectiveness, the list of ingredients can make you dizzy. And generate quite a few questions.
Especially since, according to tests carried out by Wefc France and Agir pour l’Environnement, too many sunscreens for children contain ingredients deemed to be “extremely worrying”. Almost all of the sunscreen products tested (71 in all) contain 29 substances “of varying degrees of concern”, including endocrine disruptors or nanoparticles. Ten of these ingredients are considered “extremely worrying” according to the associations: they are carcinogenic, neurotoxic and encodrin disruptors. Seven are classified as “very worrying” (because they are often classified as allergens) and twelve are “worrying” because they raise “minor health or environmental problems”, underline Wefc and Agir pour l’Environnement.
The substances to avoid in sunscreen products for children
In detail, it is 4-MBC, homosalate, octocrylene, cyclypentasilonxane, cyclohexasiloxane, nanoparticulate titanium dioxide or even phenoxyethanol which are pointed. ” Other fragrance substances established as allergens by contact in humans (…) should no longer be authorized in children’s products », According to the associations which therefore call on ANSES to assess the benefit / risk of these sunscreen products intended for the youngest.
Several substances are being re-evaluated according to the laboratories
In response to this study, which worries and confuses parents, the Federation of Beauty Companies (Febea) ensures that all the ingredients used in sun protection products comply with European cosmetic regulations. She adds that “certain ingredients cited by the study are being re-evaluated: if they were finally classified as harmful, they would be immediately removed from all cosmetic products”.
Child sun creams that contain the most substances of concern
Among the sun products particularly questioned, the Sun for Kids SPF50 + anti-sand comfort cream from the Lancaster brand, the Mixa fine solar mist for sensitive skin for children 50+ or the Transparent SPF 50+ wet spray from the brand Isdin Pediatrics.
Children’s sunscreens that contain the least amount of hazardous substances
The products that seem to contain the fewest substances of concern are Acorelle’s Very High Protection Baby Sun Cream SPF 50+, Alphanova’s Organic Baby Sun Spray SPF 50, Very High Protection Organic Child Sun Cream by Laboratoires de Biarritz, Bioderma sun foam or the Kids SPF50 organic moisturizing spray by Lovea and baby-child sun products (in milk or spray) by Mustela.
