Christina Applegate is navigating the increasing challenges of multiple sclerosis (MS), revealing she now spends the majority of her time in bed. The actress, who publicly disclosed her diagnosis in 2021, shared a poignant gaze at how the disease impacts her daily life, particularly her desire to remain actively involved in her 15-year-old daughter Sadie’s life.
Applegate described a determined effort to continue everyday routines, such as taking Sadie to school, despite the significant pain she experiences. “I want to seize her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” she told People. “I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.’ And that’s what I do.”
The 54-year-old actress, known for roles in “Married… with Children” and “Anchorman,” has been increasingly candid about the realities of living with MS. She acknowledges that her life is far from perfect, and embraces a raw honesty about her struggles. “My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow,” Applegate stated. “People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f–king suck sometimes. So I’m being as honest and raw as I possibly can.”
Applegate’s openness extends to a new online platform, Next in MS, launched earlier this month. The initiative aims to create a space for individuals living with MS to share their experiences and connect with one another. According to the platform’s website, “Living with Multiple Sclerosis isn’t easy. Christina Applegate has never sugarcoated that. She’s been open about the pain, the fatigue, the frustration—even the things that are hard to say out loud.” The platform intends to offer a glimpse into Applegate’s journey, “the good, the bad, and the ugly,” as she continues to navigate life with MS.
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system, disrupting communication between the brain, and body. Symptoms can vary widely, including weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, and vision problems, as reported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Applegate’s advocacy extends beyond her personal story. She previously used a cane emblazoned with “FU MS” at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, a visible statement of defiance against the disease, as People reported in February 2023.
In a March 2024 interview with “Good Morning America,” Applegate described living “kind of in hell” and admitted to feeling overwhelmed by public appearances, but expressed gratitude for the support she receives. She also co-hosts the podcast “MeSsy” with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who was diagnosed with MS at age 20.
As Christina Applegate continues to navigate the challenges of MS, her commitment to honesty and connection remains unwavering. Her new platform, Next in MS, represents a further step in fostering a community and providing support for those living with this complex condition. The actress’s ongoing openness is likely to continue to raise awareness and inspire others facing similar battles.
