The Municipality of Córdoba began restoration work on the General Paz Cultural Center, which had been abandoned for years and was in severe deterioration. The award of the work, which has a budget of 244 million pesos, was at the end of September.
There are two structures: an iron pavilion that was finished installing in 1917, and the other is an addition from 1982 designed by the architect Miguel Ángel Roca. And both were with a significant degree of deterioration.
They are on the corner of Pringles and Catamarca, in the General Paz neighborhood, minutes from the center of the city of Córdoba. The building had been waiting for recovery for more than a decade.
The biggest problem is the roof: regarding 20 years ago the sheets were removed, a membrane was placed, and the cover was never provided once more. The result: since then, every rain causes damage. Windows are missing, and today it was invaded by pigeons.
In 2018, during the management of Ramón Mestre, the enhancement was announced. However, these works never materialized.
what is being done
As reported by the municipality, demolition and maintenance work began in the bathrooms on plaster and ceilings. New appliances and taps will also be placed.
Tasks are carried out on one of the roofs with the lifting of waterproofing membranes for their subsequent replacement. “In this space, the ceilings are the main focus to intervene due to the high deterioration due to losses and leaks, in addition to the pathologies due to the age of the building and incomplete works,” they pointed out.
In addition, work is being done on the flooring of the internal courtyard, with the demolition of structures in poor condition. And hydraulic tests of the rainwater from the roofs and a study on the structures are carried out to examine the situation in which the building is located.
The restoration project
The file considers the removal and execution of a new roof, the replacement of funnels and rainwater pipes, the repair of bathroom facilities, the replacement of fixtures and taps, the repair of ceilings and plastering, and general painting.
Also the repair of carpentry, change of pieces degraded by oxidation, cleaning, glass repair, readjustment of electrical installation, fire and weak signals.
For the pavilion, the existing roof will be dismantled, another wooden one will be built with water and thermal insulation, and sheets will be placed. Progress will also be made in the demolition of plastering in weak sectors, installation of dehumidifiers, and carpentry repairs.
This sector is mounted on a solid reinforced concrete slab subsoil, which presents a high degree of humidity due to roof leaks. The works contemplate the reinforcement of the mezzanine floor structure with verification of foundations.
Outside, the landscaping, repair of flooring and general painting are proposed.
In the administrative wing in “ele” a new roof will be removed and executed, funnels and rain ducts will be replaced, the facilities in bathrooms will be repaired with replacement of fixtures and taps, as well as ceilings and plastering.
The project proposes the conservation of all the significant elements of the Center, so that the memory of the building is maintained and it is adapted to the determining conditions for the development of its activities.
